Chip tears into Kill/Teague for UNC: "would be comical if it weren't so pathetic."

Let's be honest here, Chip savaged Kill/Teague here mostly because he's mad that he won't be able to use Strib money to pay for his trip to UNC, and then stop off in his home state of Tennessee.

Kidding aside, I'm not thrilled with this decision either - it's not like we were walking into Blackburg or Tallahassee for a game. UNC is not a power, and certainly a winnable game. Plus, that game in Chapel Hill was under heavy consideration for me to attend as a road game.
But, if we can make up the $800K with another home game against some lesser opponent, I get that, particularly if that 1 more likely win at home lands us a bowl game (crappy or no) then it could be a net gain in revenue.

I'm still disappointed we lost the Texas matchup Brewster was cultivating.

But my bottom line is we need to win right now (weak opponents or whoever), and get in some bowls again, to help keep the recruiting train rolling and revenue up. If we had to 'lose' $800K to increase our odds at making a million going to a bowl right, then so be it.

Gopher Athletic Department must have cheered when the Big Ten/Pac 12 series(proposed) was dropped.

BTW this is the most agreed upon thread I have ever seen on GH.

I was just saying the same thing to somebody on the phone. The sky must be falling!

In all seriousness, this is a pathetic, pathetic move. I hope there is more to it than the glorification of Coach Kill's ego by creating a lineup of stiffs in the NC schedule. I also hope the $800K is offset by something. I really think the PR hit over the $800K is the most damaging aspect. You cannot spend money on frivilous things and then try to hit up your donors for support. It just will not work. I think Teague had a real opportunity here and he blew it. Put your foot down and tell Jerry that this is not happening, The U cannot afford the PR hit. You know how to go 4-0 in the NC? Beat North Carolina, that is how.

I am seriously re thininking why I want to pay money for season tickets to support a coach that is going to make decisions like this. I have not done a 180 on Kill, but I probably turned my opinion about 90 degrees last night. This decision on top of the pathetic fake FG call on Saturday just have my blood boiling a little bit.

I have supported Kill 100% and think he will be successful, but this is not the type of success I want. Let's not gerrymander our record. This is out of the Glen Mason playbook.

Spot on.

Is it possible that this was promised to Kill before Teague was hired? I don't see what Teague gains by agreeing to cancel this game.

I've already given my opinion on the issue prior to it becoming official, so I'll spare everyone a long response and just say that the word "pathetic" sums up this situation well.

I'd love to blame this on Maturi as much as anyone. But even if it was 'promised' to Kill before, Teague should have told him 'tough s$%^' man up and play the games. It's two games against a team the level of Northwestern at best. Not a 10-year agreement to get mauled by LSU.

I'm in the minority on this but I agree that we play a tough conference schedule

We are guaranteed to play Nebraska, Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan State, and Northwestern every year.
This is six guaranteed games a year that we are going to get physically beat up, pushed and push our roster to our limits.
We should not have to look down on the fact that we are scheduled for potentially 6 losses every year, and what I mean by this is we are already playing opponents that have just as much chance to bear us as we do them and gain the win.

While I agree we do not get a lot of game experience or value from playing non conference foes that are from weaker conferences what we do not do is get a lot of Injury's and get players as physically banged up as they would be. We do get game repetitions and that is important. I'm in the minority on this issue but I do not dislike getting rid of North Carolina at this point in time. The Gophers are still building a program and only have 8 Seniors this year we need as many home games as we can get.

Explain the injuries this year compared to last year when we played USC. Or the prior yet when we played USC. Which year had the most injuries. Playing decent to good teams doesn't mean we are going to get beat up, injuries happen vs any level of opponent.

North Carolina is an attractive name, but with sanctions it is another school "we should beat". A loss to them is just as ugly as a loss to a lower conference team.

I would disagree that North Carolina, even with sanctions, is in the same category as whatever crappy team we will be replacing them with. But even if they are, I would think casual fans would be more forgiving of a loss to North Carolina, a, in your opinion, bad BCS team, than a loss to a good mid-major team.

I think most would be more accepting of a loss to North Carolina than to a MAC or Conference USA team of equal caliber. The name would affect perception, a loss to BCS team just doesn't look as bad.

I am also slightly surprised by the almost unanimous opinion in this thread that it was really lame to cancel the series, considering the previous thread about this exact same topic contained at least a few posters explaining why it was a good decision, or at least trying to see why Kill would do this.

One argument I can at least kind of understand was that dropping North Carolina for a "guaranteed win" could be the difference between being bowl eligible and not being bowl eligible, which gives the benefits of bowl revenue and extra practices. Still though, North Carolina is not a powerhouse team, there's the sanctions, and even if we lost, 3 wins out of conference plus 3 wins in conference is pretty reasonable in years 3 and 4. Brewster did it in years 2 and 3.

Knowing this information would diminish his column's argument, so he didn't see the need.

Disagree completely. It's not like scheduling some crap team is going to suddely make this a great decision. I don't care if we somehow turn a profit out of this or not. The PR hit, not understanding the Gopher fanbase's feelings on playing said crap team, possibility of losing to said crap team, and the fact that few would give a darn if we lost to UNC.

Since the conference splits all bowl revenues, it really doesn't matter if we go or Indiana goes in a financial sense right?

He wants to go back to the Mason days of cupcake easy wins and a handful of conference wins to equal "success".

Gray was injured while playing who????? Western Michigan!!!!

This move sends the wrong message to the recruits and the fans, we know we aren't very good and we are scared of any BCS opponent.
