Chip tears into Kill/Teague for UNC: "would be comical if it weren't so pathetic."

Wow, Chip doesn't hold back:

The Gophers backed out of their home-and-home series with North Carolina in 2013-14 in favor of trying to find a lesser opponent. The kicker is even more of a doozy: The Gophers paid North Carolina $800,000 to cancel the series. That's right, an athletic department that struggles to make budget every year is forking over $800,000 to avoid playing North Carolina.

That would be comical if it weren't so pathetic.

A 4-0 nonconference record coupled with two or three Big Ten victories might qualify them for a bowl game, but that's hardly a satisfying formula over the long haul.

Good luck selling that one to a fanbase that already has had its patience and loyalty stretched way too thin. The Gophers can't fill 50,000-seat TCF Bank Stadium even for conference games, and they practically beg fans to show up on a weekly basis. They don't give fans much incentive to make that investment, however, when they put together a nonconference schedule that's embarrassingly soft.

Go Gophers!!

North Carolina in our weight class? That is enough proof for me to know that Chip does not know what the *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# he is talking about. Does he know Jerry is pretty much building this program from scratch? A fanbase that has had is patience stretch too thin? Give me a break. Jerry Kill has a better idea of how to build a program than Chip does.

Now lets go get healthy before we visit the BADgers

Yeah.. I'm disappointed in this. I certainly hope they get this program turned around and start scheduling heavy BCS schools like the class of the Big12/Pac12/SEC etc.

I really don't understand why Kill is so afraid of playing a decent team. We are talking North Carolina here. What does that tell the players if the coach is backing away from a mediocre Carolina team?

I don't think it's worth all of the hoopla that the media is making it out to be, but it's a little disappointing to me. I would have liked to see a home and home with an FBS team rather than play NMSU again. I really don't care if bragging rights are at stake. Finish top half of the B1G, there's you're bragging rights.

Tough to argue with...my buddies in Columbus who always use the MN football program as a punchline will have a field day with this change. What's Teague afraid of? This fans aren't idiots and can smell french pastry (or cupcakes) from a mile away.

North Carolina is a middling ACC team about to get hit with some significant sanctions. Regardless of where we THINK we are at, we should play the game. Chip is spot on this time. A completely cowardly and pathetic move from Coach Kill, A guy I like, but I cannot support this decision.

It is hard to want to donate and be sympathetic to Coach Kill's desire for facility upgrades when they are okay with wasting 800K plus on something like this.

Tomorrow's press conference should be interesting if Coach Kill will be able to conduct one.

North Carolina is no big draw here - play Iowa State or the Dakota teams, as their fans travel. With both Nebraska and Michigan on the schedule every year, we don't need tougher non-cons, but ones that will sell tickets in the region.

Wow, that's two straight articles from the Strib I agree with. Yikes.

On to the point, this is not good in any way, shape, or form. Basically Teague and Kill are saying "We stink right now, we're going to continue to stink, and because of that, we'll try to beat some bad teams so we can give the appearance of having a competitive football team." Gee, thanks guys. I'm now totally looking forward to basking in the glory of having a "good" (wink, wink) football team to cheer for! :banghead:

I don't disagree with anything chip is saying! He never said kill doesn't know how to build a program but does state the obvious. Our athletic budget isn't in a position to throw away a million dollars. Unc is not a top tier team and we would have a legit chance of beating them. They are not Florida st. This is a joke that we are dumping this game from a financial standpoint. The casual fan base thinks we are the same old gophers, more and more fans are going to not renew their seats, and we are basically giving away tickets to get people in the stadium. You may not like what he wrote but he isn't wrong.

IMO It is simple - for $800,000 we better be scheduling our 4th home game next year. If we replace the UNC game with a road game then it makes ZERO sense. If we replace them with a home game so be it - another 4-0 start; more revenue for an additional home game even with the buy out. My initial reaction was upset as I wanted to go to UNC and the rumor was we were instead playing at New Mexico next year. I believe they know they can't get away with that and Kaller would never sign off on that. I will give them the benefit of the doubt - the math is simple.

While I know that the athletic budget is separate, it could have a negative impact on other parts of the university. Good luck getting more money from the state with stories like this coming out. If Teague won't put an end to this, Kaler should. I just hope this does add another home game, though it sounds like it is a home and home.

I will be surprised if he addresses this at all.

It is just sad that we are paying money to avoid playing a decent team from a basketball conference. The only way any of this makes any financial sense is if we add a home game. That way the season ticket holders can subsidize the buyout and the cost of lining up the cupcake. Might break even or even turn a tiny profit if the season ticket base remains big enough.

From a PR standpoint though this is a complete and total joke and it makes our program look weak that we are so afraid to have one competitive non-conf game on our schedule that we are willing to fork over 800K just to get out of it. With the 4 game non-conf schedule I really don't think it is out of line for fans to expect at least one decent game in there to go along with the three layups. Back when we used to only play 11 games I could understand that thought process a little bit more but with 12 games one decent opponent is not asking much.

If it is replaced with an additional home game in 2013, it will be another game that can be coupled with Nebraska, Iowa, and Wisconsin tickets. Cha-ching!

+1 and I agree, let's focus on SIN-BAD.

Go Gophers!

Schedule smart and when we can consistently beat B1G teams week in and week out, then look to upgrade the non-conference schedule.

Go Gophers!

I agree. Pretty pathetic if you ask me.

How do you think the players feel when they hear this? Your coach is scared to play mediocre, sanction ready UNC, so scared that theyre going to actually pay them 800k to back out. Does that make you believe in what your coach is telling you everyday in practice, are you really competing for a B1G Championships?

One thing you can't knock Brewster about was bringing in quality games. I loved seeing USC here. It was great. The reality is that we have one of the toughest conference schedules in the Big Ten with our crossover games. However, one tough non-conference game a season is not asking too much.

Agreed, we looked like a decent team vs USC

Very disappointing from our coach and new AD. What piece of crap team will they drag in here? Really pathetic.

He's right. There's no defending this. It's bad enough that Kill's scared to take on a mediocre ACC team. But I don't care how scared Kill is. An athletic department that makes it's MBB team travel to 2-3 games by bus to save a few thousand bucks can't fork over $800K for something this pathetic. There's no excuse for it. This lowers my opinion of Teague more than Kill, but they should both be ashamed.

we paid $800K to get out of the series...but did New Mexico give us any money to get into the series?

The Syracuse Game was wonderful. The electricity, noise and excitement in the Stadium was special. It was a great Night. Coach Kill must have a short memory. You will not see this playing a non BCS Cupcake.

Gee!! Next year
Indiana plays Missouri
Northwestern plays California, Syracuse and Vanderbilt
Illinois plays Cincinnati and Washington
Purdue plays Cincinnati and Notre Dame

What an advantage we will have over those Suckers????

That's the thing. We not only have to pay UNC to get out of the game, but we'll likely have to also pay the team that comes into TCF to play us.
