per Chip:

If an investigation discovers that anyone in a position of authority knew about Teague’s behavior, those individuals should be punished. The university must inspect closely and discipline harshly to demonstrate its commitment to doing what’s right.

The first step is to figure out the extent of Teague’s behavior so that everyone has a complete picture. He didn’t just have one bad night, and it can’t be blamed on being extremely intoxicated.

The university has a responsibility to find the scope of damage he inflicted before it can truly move forward.

Go Gophers!!

If the Strib is going to dig up dirt on the U (which it is), it better make sure its own house is in order, especially the HR department. If not, why didn't the digging commence when Amelia first told the Strib's HR?

Agreed. Chip can be outraged all he wants and the school can launch an investigation to move heaven and earth to find out who knew and when.

But, one thing we absolutely know with 100% certainty.....the editors at the state's largest, most powerful media institution (who's job is quite literally that of watchdog), KNEW about this, and did nothing to let anyone at the U know.

It is a tough situation in all regards and I understand why Rayno didn't want to move forward. But, let's understand that before we get all high and mighty, Chip. Your bosses knew about this atrocity and did nothing. What should become of those people who knew? Same fate as those at the U who might have known?

In Chip's own indignant words -- "If an investigation discovers that anyone in a position of authority knew about Teague’s behavior, those individuals should be punished. The university must inspect closely and discipline harshly to demonstrate its commitment to doing what’s right."

Does that include the single, biggest media watchdog organization in the state of Minnesota? The Minneapolis Star-Tribune knew. They chose not to do anything. Who should be "disciplined harshly to demonstrate its commitment to doing what’s right" or "held to account" at the newspaper? Knowing the paper has a purpose of informing the public about goings-on in institutions and society, especially in circumstances where a significant portion of the public would demand changes in response to such findings.

Where's the indignant outrage toward your bosses, Chip? They knew.

Sounding pretty defensive. Is what he wrote wrong?

I'm guessing there were rumors and innuendos about Teague. I'm sure there have been rumors and innuendo about others at the U, and some that were false.

It's a slippery slope, and you can also find yourself in a lawsuit for false accusations.

Let's see what happens here before we make judgments.

No, he's 100% correct. Absolutely the U should launch a full scale investigation.

As one could argue, so should have a reputable, large-scale news media organization if they had possibly known.

Exactly. This one works both ways.

Really curious how the Strib will respond to this one. My guess is they won't. As one news executive told a colleague years ago, they police themselves and answer to no one. If they do, I predict they throw Amelia under the bus and say it was her call to not pursue it. Speculation, of course, but it won't surprise me at all. Maybe it's time for a rival media institution to get involved in the Strib's role in keeping it quiet.

Great post. The Strib is last in line here when it comes to passing judgement on how the U handled this.
