Chip Kelly Leaving UCLA

Guessing his contract buyout was not a lot?

Wonder if this is a byproduct of this crazy era....guy like Kelly deciding he would rather just be an OC and let someone else deal with all the headaches of roster management, collectives. pay for play....

Maybe he was seeing some writing on the wall about his job? After going 10-21 (6-15 in conference) his first 3 years (2018-2020) at UCLA he seemed to figure it out and went 25-13 (16-11 in conference) the past 3 years.

However, his in-conference ranking has trended down sharply the past 3 years. Tied for 2nd in the south division in 2021 after going 6-3 in conference, but in 2022 the Pac 12 eliminated their divisions and UCLA placed 5th overall after going 6-3 in conference again in 2022, and then 8th overall after going 4-5 in conference in 2023.

And I would definitely say that the B1G will be a harder conference for them to win in moving forward and their 2024 schedule is pretty brutal, with games @LSU (finished ranked #12), vs Oregon (finished tied for #6), @ Penn State (finished ranked #13), vs Iowa (finished ranked #24 somehow), and @Washington (finished ranked #2). That's probably 4 or 5 losses right there. Not to mention their game vs the Gophers ;).

There's a very possible chance UCLA finishes below .500 next year and continues their downward trend, so maybe he wanted to get out before his seat started to get too hot and he was facing getting fired.

It's probably easier for him to get paid well as an OC at a P5 school by moving now, rather than waiting until he possibly gets fired from being an HC. Plus maybe he thinks if he does well as OC there, and Ryan Day gets fired down the line, he could just become HC at Ohio State like Ryan Day did when Urban Meyer left.
