A night like this provides hope. It provides belief that maybe better days are around the corner.

The Gophers men’s basketball program has wandered through the wilderness for a long time. Way too long, which is why a moment like what unfolded Wednesday night feels like sunrays poking through clouds.

On paper, the Gophers had no business of winning their Big Ten opener against the Indiana Hoosiers.

Riding a three-game losing streak — and not against powerhouse programs either — the Gophers were missing three of their top eight players because of injury, including starting point guard Chansey Willis Jr.

The Hoosiers came to town undefeated and ranked No. 22 nationally.

The Gophers didn’t flinch.

Go Gophers!!

It's the first game in a long time, where I felt we weren't outcoached! Playing the post guys straight up, and not giving open three's was a great plan. Also, having 5 guys who can potentially hit an outside shot made the court very spread out of offense.
I like that Niko is willing to be flexible with his lineups. Turner started after vaihola was hurt, then Grove and now Durkin. The starting 5 against IU probably the best way to go with current available players. Going to be tough against teams with a legit center obviously. Much better than rolling out the same 5 every night regardless of performance or matchups.

Otzelberger was coaching in South Dakota when Coyle hired Ben? How is it possible for Coyle to miss people in bordering states?

Who cares about Ben. Move on.

Also Otzelberger was struggling at UNLV before moving to Iowa State. He went 17-15 and 12-15 in 2019 and 2020. You would not have been happy if we hired him. Not to mention Iowa State has better NIL funding and fan buy in.

Iowa State has better NIL funding??

You know as well as I do that NIL does not need to be publicized by the universities so the information on what they truly have is low. It also isn't that hard to see that ISU has had more success funding players than we have. FYI 7.55 Million would be about 5 million more than what we think the Gophers had last year.

Nothing personal, but I let out a little chuckle when I saw the source was a Facebook post 😄

Not just a Facebook post, but a Facebook post that all of the comments say is inaccurate 🤣. NIL information is private and isn't posted anywhere so you can only see speculation about numbers. USAF knows this, so whenever someone posts anything about NIL he likes to "prove them wrong" by asking for sources.

It is not hard to look at a team and know which team has more NIL resources (at least so far). Profit Sharing and changing the NIL rules to be service based are steps in the right direction.

Im pretty skeptical Iowa State has any kind of NIL advantage over Minnesota.
Make that really damn strongly skeptical.
As in, no effing way.

You may underestimate the wealth of the farming industry.

I would not doubt it. Iowa State sports is all that area has.

Way off topic to where the thread started, so this will be the last thing I write on it.

Iowa State currently does have an advantage in NIL and has over the last 4 years. Two clear reasons are they hired a coach who had instant success, making it easier for their fans to buy in and donate. Second, Iowa has no pro teams, their college teams are their pro teams. Here when the Gophers are bad we go watch a good team like the Wolves, Wild, or Vikings. In Iowa, they sit at home and do what exactly? NIL as it was, wasn't sustainable. Profit Sharing will level the playing field and as NIL becomes more about pay for specific service, it will level out more.

Back to my original point. Who in their right mind would have been excited about hiring a coach that went 17-15 and 12-15 in the Mountain West? Finished 4th in the conference and 7th. Never made the tourney. Better than hiring a guy with no experience, but not one that we would have thought moved the needle.

Coyle was told AAU pipeline would flow if he hired BenJo. Buncha hs school coach wannabes wagged the dog in that one.
