According to this tweet by Marcus Fuller last night.

Word is that the best Gophers freshman basketball player this year could be late signee Gerald "Chip" Armelin. I hear he can really score.

Really?

I think Austin Hollins will be the best freshman, but I'm not surprised to hear good things about Chip. He was a pretty good player in high school, but lost some interest from D1 basketball programs because he decided to play football as a senior. IIRC, he had some football scholarships as well.

Chip was still available as a late signee because most D1 programs didn't have scholarships open and Chip flew under the radar.

Did he play on the Canada trip?

Nope, he wasn't eligible for the trip coming in to late, but is good to go now.

That would be a pleasant surprise if he is able to contribute some good minutes off the bench.

Hollins played off the bench on the Canadian trip. Armelin signed to late to be in summer school and wasn't eligible for the trip.

If Chip is even in the conversation for our best freshman when the season starts I will be happy.

It'd be a pleasant surprise to have a bench scoring presence from a freshman. Hope it's true.

Remember, things said in September and October are often way too optimistic. It was only two years ago when Devron Bostick was going to be a savior.

Maybe this kid is really good. We'll see on this.

My guess, however, is that Hollins is the most productive of the freshmen. If there is one thing that Tubby likes, it is fundamentally sound basketball. Hollins has been well-coached, has played in systems and isn't a product of me-first AAU basketball. Throw in the fact that he can play multiple positions -- my guess is at some point in his career he sees regular minutes at PG -- and I'll be surprised if he isn't the most effective.

Tidbit

Chip's real first name is Gerald. (He's a Junior)

Tubby loves that name, pronounces it "Jurr-eld" though.

The name reminds him of UK star guard Gerald Fitch.

I'll go on record saying that if Chip is the Gophers' best freshman, that's probably not a good thing. I expect that tag to go to Hollins, Walker or even Eliason. Still not convinced Gophers will redshirt Eliason.

Gophers need 1 or maybe 2 of their freshmen to give them some decent, productive minutes. "Play 8, trust 7" as Coach Mo used to say.

Agreed 100%. Just like you said, Tubby recruits kids with high basketball IQ.

Go Gophers

Mo! What a guy, I always enjoyed him... I got to watch see him get pummeled 35-87 by ASU last year. He is on his last leg with the Lethernecks. They need to turn it around this season, I wish him luck.

Bingo. Definitely two ways of looking at it.

We need some meaningful minutes from freshmen; we need everyone to stay healthy and eligible; but, most of all, we need Williams to really step it up. All three of those things happen, and we can be a factor for the Big Ten title.

Ya well Bostick could really score too and see how he turned out.

It sounds like your assumption is that Chip isn't very good, so if he's our best, the others are bad. I prefer to look at it as though if he's our best freshman, we got a sleeper and it's a big bonus for this class.

And, there wouldn't be anything wrong with Chip being our best freshman but we still get help at other positions from other freshmen. Heck, maybe he's our best freshman but doesn't play much becuase of the guys ahead of him.

We've all seen Mo and Hollins play a little bit at least. Most people have tagged them as at a minimum good role players. Chip is just kind of a wildcard, so to hear he has that potential is not a bad thing in my opinion. An athletic guy that can shoot and create can find minutes on this team down the road.

I think Chip could be a crowd (and Tubby) favorite because he apparently prides himself on the defensive end. He'll probably get minutes because he's very athletic and has the potential to lockdown players.

Clipped From Old (2007) ESPN Insider Article

This was summary of Las Vegas "Main Event" AAU tourney:

• 6-3 SG Gerald Armelin (Sulphur, La.) creates offense extremely well off the dribble. He can score in a number of ways and has good athleticism. Armelin has the potential to become to become a nice player.

Um, walker was the most productive to those who say hollins was the best. I think hollins and Mo will get decent minutes because they can really play. If chip is better than them, we are in for a treat.

LOL all you want but Tubby (and Donna) have a special spot in their hearts for Fitch. He lost a close family member (brother, uncle - I forget which) to murder as a teenager and was a troubled young man at UK in 2001 and 2002.

They helped him through those difficult times and stuck by him at UK. Eventually Fitch matured and became one of Tubby's best players at UK - a 4 year starter (not many of those).

So YES the name "Gerald" reminds Tubby of Fitch.

Never laughed and never said that the name (Gerald) doesn't remind Tubby (Smith) of Fitch. Just stated you (Friend of Tubby) are creepy.

The word "creepy" must mean that I have more knowledge in my fingernail clippings than your brain does?

You are about to be numb nutted.

i can buy it, i dont get why people are so concerned that he might be the best because of how many stars he may or may not have. i mean tom brady wasnt exactly being rushed off the board on draft day was he? and he worked out pretty well right? scouting is never perfect
