per the Chicago Tribune:

Teddy Greenstein

Dark horse: Minnesota. The sound, solid Gophers have a terrific secondary and might dabble with a no-huddle offense for QB Mitch Leidner.

Shannon Ryan

Dark horse: Minnesota. The Gophers have made strides under coach Jerry Kill and narrowly missed winning the West last season.

Fred Mitchell

Dark horse: Minnesota. Coach Jerry Kill has a well-earned reputation of turning also-rans into champions. If not this season, perhaps very soon.

Hey Bleed, it costs money!

I don't consider us a dark horse, I think there's a good argument we are the favorite in the West. Just like most other teams we're vulnerable if we suffer a key injury such as our starting QB, and the schedule difference makes our task a bit tougher, but all other things being equal I think we have the most talent in the West.

While I enjoy the enthusiasm, we aren't a favorite until we beat WI. Period.

It's often a fine line between contending and an also ran. Most are confident the D will be as good, or even better, than last year.

I'm not as confident about our O as some. We've lost our two most important weapons, Cobb and Maxx. I'm not as confident about Leidner's improvement as some. like every year, time will tell.

Looking forward to the season, and a genuine chance for success.

Ditto this.
