Would have started next year.Someone mentioned another name was coming and Cheney was the one that was speculated. The Anderson loss hurts more in the short term in regards to guys that were playing a lot. Never really clicked for Cheney here for one reason or another.
Maybe. We’ll see who transfers in. Rosters are becoming increasingly fluid because of the portal. The talent that PJ assembled on the D line is leaving. Who will replace these kids?
Thin on the D line next year....
Little bit at DT, the portal taketh and giveths. The talent that PJ assembled on the D line is leaving. Who will replace these kids?
Thin on the D line next year....
Not sure how you can say that with any certainty. Even if we assume that the older guys are gone (some speculation Big O comes back) we still have all the following DL players on the roster right now:Would have started next year.
Much like free agency in the NFL, although it appears to be easier in college.Transfers come and transfers go. Its the circle of life.
Biggest difference being that in college you have to make all these moves during the off season whereas in the NFL you can sign guys in season to fill holes in your roster.Much like free agency in the NFL, although it appears to be easier in college.
Was so excited when Cheney committed, so in that way it's disappointing. But the list you just posted gives me some hope. Carter is obviously the lead dog there, but we've seen Richter and Joyner already and heard buzz about Eastern and Logan-Redding. Schuster was highly rated and wanted by some big programs as well. Staff also has two 4* DL committed in Bixby and Smith. Toss in a surprise or two and then a transfer, I guess we'll be OK.Not sure how you can say that with any certainty. Even if we assume that the older guys are gone (some speculation Big O comes back) we still have all the following DL players on the roster right now:
Carter, Keys, McCoy, Kern, Schuster, Joyner, Eastern, Stiggow, Booker, Richter, Logan-Redding and a few others. That is a group that is light on experience but has a number of pretty highly rated guys in the mix.
Wouldn't be a surprise to see them go snag a transfer or two as well to bolster the group depending on how many we lose from the current rotation.
I don't think it would impact it because they won't be at the school anymore after the transfer and not counted in the calculation. The only way it could, I suppose, is if they transfer in during/for their last year of eligibility and fail to graduate? Are teams going to struggle with grad rates now that kids don’t have to sit a year when they leave?
The high profile coaching changes could definitely lead to some talented players taking advantage of the portal and looking around for another opportunity.I wonder how much this has to do with the younger recruits over the last few years? The Gophers have been recruiting well across the DL.
Jah Joyner was a high 3* two years ago.
Deven Eastern was a 4* with Jacob Schuster and Austin Booker as high 3*s in last years class.
Our two 4*s for next season are Trey Bixby and Anthony Smith, both defensive lineman.
You still have Carter who already starts, Striggow who has played in every game, Richter, Logan-Redding, and Keys all in the system.
I'm going to guess they bring in another transfer or two as well, especially with how many coaching changes are going to happen this offseason. It will be interesting to see what happens with Fickell at Cincinnati and Wilts connections there.
Don't think you can link their playing time situations. Anderson was part of the D-Line rotation and has seen significant playing time this season. According to Burns tweet to start this thread, Cheney has seen 40 snaps on the season. Were Cheney and Anderson really that buried on the depth chart?? No hope for next season??
Not buying that.
When I saw the Anderson news, I looked at the roster to see which DL was in the same class as Anderson. Cheney was the one that most closely aligned.
Have no idea if they are thus roommates and/or friends outside of football. Wild guess would be they are/were.
Very sorry to say, but this just reinforces for me a little bit that something might have happened, off the field, such that these two were told that they will no longer be apart of the program and should consider their options elsewhere.
I have zero knowledge, insider or otherwise. Pure wild guess.
Innocent until proven guilty 100% applies here.
But it just makes no sense, why you would give up 1 week before the end of the regular season, and possibly (not zero chance) another week then before the conf champ game.
Most of those guys are DE, not DT. Eastern, McCoy, Schuster and Richter would be his only competition. He definitely would have had the first crack to start alongside Carter. Not sure how you can say that with any certainty. He was supposed to start this year and they brought transfers in to play over him.Would have started next year.
Still have Rush and I'm guessing Eziri is coming back if MJ went into the portal. Still have Jah Joyner, Danny Striggow, Gage Keys and Logan-Redding on DE, Carter, Eastern, Booker, Luther McCoy and Richter at DT, with Bixby, Smith and Pyburn all coming in next year. I think Val Martin has another year of eligibility as well, but I would hit the portal for another DT, Fleck had some good success doing that in his tenure, but even without MJ, we are sitting pretty well at DEThe talent that PJ assembled on the D line is leaving. Who will replace these kids?
Thin on the D line next year....
Correct.Would have started next year.
MJ is big O's back up. Perhaps Big O made it clear he's coming back for another year and since MJ has put three years intom the program, perhaps he wants to go somewhere where he can start, could be as simple as that. Were Cheney and Anderson really that buried on the depth chart?? No hope for next season??

Or you know....we lost 2 potential backups for next year who would have continued to provide depth.Correct.
We just lost two potential starters on the DL for next year.
A position that has been very difficult for us to recruit into.
Didn't Fleck say it's his job to out-recruit the previous players on the roster? or was that a Killism?I wonder how much this has to do with the younger recruits over the last few years? The Gophers have been recruiting well across the DL.

Correct. They have a lot of DE types in the system, but they're going to need a few more bigger bodies to play in the interior. Most of those guys are DE, not DT. Eastern, McCoy, Schuster and Richter would be his only competition. He definitely would have had the first crack to start alongside Carter.
They’ll definitely have to snag a transfer DT now if they weren’t going to before.
You are correct, Fleck said that.Didn't Fleck say it's his job to out-recruit the previous players on the roster? or was that a Killism?
Cheney was actually pretty brutal. No loss here at all. It opens up another spot. The talent that PJ assembled on the D line is leaving. Who will replace these kids?
Thin on the D line next year....
