From Charley Walters of the Pioneer Press:
It wouldn’t occur for at least a couple of years, but Gophers quarterback Tanner Morgan, who’ll be a junior next season, has the potential to be a starting quarterback in the National Football League.
That’s the opinion of ESPN’s Mel Kiper, the foremost expert on projecting the NFL draft.
“(Morgan) is heavily on the radar,” Kiper opined for the Pioneer Press. “He’s a guy to watch, potentially a future starter in the NFL. He’s got good pocket presence, throws a nice, catchable ball and he’s accurate. And he’s a leader.”
As for one of Morgan’s favorite receivers last season,Tyler Johnson, Kiper has given him a third-round grade for the draft, which begins Thursday.
“He’s got the ability to stretch the field vertically,” Kiper said. “Some people question his consistently to catch the football, but he’s made some key catches in pivotal situations. Some depth at wide receiver gets him pushed down a bit, but at the worst he’s a fourth-rounder. There’s a lot of mixed opinion on wide receivers. Some third-rounders could become fifth- or sixth-rounders, and a fifth-rounder could become a third-rounder.”
Kiper watched St. John’s offensive left tackle Ben Bartch in the playoffs against Aurora University (Ill.) last season and said the 6-5 ½, 310-pounder “is in that third-round discussion. He had an effective punch move, he’s a knee bender, which you want for pass protection, he’s got a mean streak and he’s a finisher. I’d be surprised if he gets out of Round Three.”
Exceptional left tackles are hard to find. With NFL coaching, some people feel Bartch could become a 10-year starter.
Kiper’s latest projection has Gophers safety Antoine Winfield Jr. going No. 26 overall to the Dolphins.
