"Gophers athletic director Joel Maturi, on why he has an empty bullet casing on his desk: "It's the bullet I dodged," he said, referring to criticism he gets as part of the job."

He ate the bullet and got lead poisoning. This explains the hiring of Tim Brewster.

Once again, underwhelmed by Macturi's constant whining that he's not appreciated. While we can all cite his accomplishments, and there certainly are some, we can also point to a number of issues that are the reason he's gotten himself in trouble. If he believes he's been treated so badly then now's the time to step down and give us all a break from listening to his "poor me" schtick.

I agree, Minnesota fans don't ask for that much and he should take criticism as being legit.

Too bad. If Gopher fans demanded a B1G worthy football program he would have been long gone. We need better fans as well as a better AD. Try being one. There is no physical pain involved.

I’ve heard that there is no more exhilarating feeling than being shot at, and missed.

Maturi

Pros
New football field
Tubby

Cons
Gopher football is terrible
Gopher hockey has lost it's special place and is now average
Gopher basketball even with Tubby is average

If the big three gopher sports were stocks I wouldn't touch them, would you? Well maybe, Gopher hockey with a new coach not chosen by Maturi. Its tough being a Gopher fan.

Just like Joel last summer said, "I love my job, but I am not having fun anymore." Enough already Maturi. We are sick and tired of your whining. You are in your mid-60's, hang it up already.

Ha. The hate on Maturi is amusing. Getting old, but amusing nonetheless..

You cannot disagree though, can you Formo? That being said, I think he bailed himself out with Jerry Kill. By all accounts, we have a real football coach.

Right now, the only thing he's got going for him is Tubby. Jury is going to be out on Kill for a couple of years yet. I think Mike Hebert was already here when Maturi was hired. The New Brickhouse falls far more on Bob Bruininks than Maturi.

On the other side of the ledger, you have the botched extensions and firings of Mason and Monson, the decline of hockey as a flagship program, women's BB going from near-break-even to a complete disaster, and a seven-figure settlement coming out of golf.

No physical pain?

Cons
The Gopher Women's BB program is almost as bad as it ever has been.

I wouldn't say that. The the team isn't good, but it is 8-9 overall. It's not in Littlejohn territory.

Wasn't he responsible for merging the two athletic departments? If so, that is a huge "pro".

Yep, I forgot about "Getting rid of Chris Voelz" on the pro side of the ledger. That's still only two things.

The domestication of the dog continued unabated during the Joel Maturi regime.
