I remember one of the first Gopher games I went to as my youth, Gophers were playing Purdue and of course a bad call was made.
A chorus of "Bu11$4it" filled Williams Arena. I think at that point it seemed new to chant that after an awful call.

Seems now I can't watch a home Gopher game without at some point hearing that chant even on what is a minor call that probably was correct, that just happened to go against the Gophers.

Why is it the Gopher student section, or fans in general haven't moved on to a more creative and less profane chant after a bad call?
It's now been done for easily 30+ years, and I'm sure it's longer than that.

It's somewhat embarrassing to watch the game on TV with the kids, and over the TV, we start to hear a profane chant over the air.

I'm not saying you can't rip the refs, but can't we think of something more clever?

Am I the only one or do other fans really enjoy this chant.

I enjoy the chant.

Then again, I really don't believe in the concept of 'profane' language.

The only people I know who have a problem with it are my grandparents.

It's pretty much the universal chant. It's done in high schools across the country. I wouldn't read too much into it.

I certainly think it is important that the fans have a way to let the refs know they disagree. This chant's virtues are simplicity and ease of execution. As you point out, its chief drawback is lack of creativity. I may be wrong, but I feel like if the student section started trying to coordinate some creative way to make fun of the refs that was tougher to execute, the leftover "no fun" guys from Maturi's regime would do everything in their power to stop it. There is nothing they can do about a bull spit chant unless they want to toss the whole student section out, which they wouldn't do.

I used to go to Spokane Chiefs games when I was in high school. There, when the ref made a bad call, the arena would put up on the video board Dorothy from Wizard of Oz saying "what would you do with a brain if you had one?" and then looping those 2 seconds 3 times. That always amused me.

Actually I don't have a problem with the chant. I still prefer 'these refs suck'. At least it's not Fock Bo Ryan.

I think they could come up with something new that would be better.

We sound like a bunch of Badger fans.

I'll start yelling "I strenuously object!" Is that better? Tough for thousands to yell in unison though.

So the 3 people that don't like it have all posted here. How about we let this thread die and move on to less serious matters?

I'm a big fan of "nuts and bolts, nuts and bolts, We Got SCREWED!"

That's like saying why haven't they invented a new "F" word.

I still like the Badger Student Section at the Kohl, when they yell in unison: "Let's Go Bastards" clap, clap, clap clap clap. "Let's Go Bastards" clap, clap, clap clap clap.

I guess I'd like to think of the U of M being a little classier than some of the lower class of the Big Ten. This chant however is something I'd consider non-classy.

Didn't the band use to play three blind mice, still done at hockey games

I actually heard reference to this on the Sunday morning sports show on 1500. I think it was Korzo who said they couldn't play it at basketball games anymore...........just a brief mention.

I'm actually pretty sure they chant "Bulls Shirt" - they used to have a Bulls jersey they'd hold up for this. Obviously, sounds the same, but a little loophole.

"Obfuscate, Obfuscate, Compel them to Relinquish the Ball!"

That was a chant from the High School my mother attended. She was a cheerleader. And yes, it was public school. In Utah.

They reserved their strongest vitriol for the referees. It's so outlandish I can't post it here.

And at the same time promoting entrepreneurship. Gotta love it.

Meh. I think that "bull****" and the nuts and bolts are both tacky chants. I liked the other chant in this thread. "these refs suck".

What is less profane than Bull$hit? Please go put your head back into the sand or arse from which you pulled it. I thought the Amish weren't allowed to use computers anyways.

Was going to say the same thing. That's the reason for the MJ jersey.

It seems to me that "bull****" is used more often for a singular bad call, whereas "these refs suck" is used after getting consistently hosed. I think you might have heard it if our game at Purdue from earlier this week had been at the Barn.

I find a wondrous relief in the use of profanity.

Well stated, GaG.

I use profanity in excess because I can't think of intelligent adjectives to use. In fact, if we took the "f" word out of the English Language, I would be a mute.

All those in favor of taking the "f" work out of the English Language say 'aye'.

All I can say is that that call was bu11$4it.
