The Big South, Horizon and Ohio Valley kick off the conference tournament season tonight. Who's going to be Championship Week's conference tourney Cinderella(s)? Could it be a #8 seed the likes of High Point (Big South) or Georgia State (Colonial), both who served as Gopher nonconference cupcakes? Or will it come from one of the major conferences, an NC State, a Northwestern, a Wazzu or perhaps an Alabama making a 4-day run to an unexpected NCAA bid?
15 of the 30 conference tournaments start between now and Sunday. Here's how I see the first half of the conference tourneys playing out.
America East: Vermont (#2 seed) -- make 1st appearance since Coppenrath/Sorrentine dynasty.
Atlantic Sun: Lipscomb (#4) -- red-hot Big Daddy takes advantage of home court.
Big Sky: Weber State (#1) -- should cruise to title, with Portland State the only resistance.
Big South: VMI (#2) -- hard not to pick a team that won in Lexington.
Colonial: VCU (#1) -- balanced conference could have a ton of upsets, but stick with Eric Maynor.
Horizon: Cleveland State (#3) -- this would be bad news for all bubble teams.
Metro Atlantic: Siena (#1) -- toss-up between host Saints and capable Niagara.
Missouri Valley: Illinois State (#3) -- Redbirds force Creighton to the bubble.
Northeast: Robert Morris (#1): Bob Morris won't waste top seed two years in a row.
Ohio Valley: Murray State (#3) -- it's usually Murray or (let's go) Peay from the OVC.
Patriot: American (#1) -- won't be challenged on way to back-to-back titles.
Southern: Davidson (#1 South) -- Charleston or The Citadel could send Steph Curry to the NIT.
Summit: North Dakota State (#1) -- Ben Woodside deserves a national stage for his PG talents.
Sun Belt: Western Kentucky (#1 East) -- new coach, same result.
West Coast: Gonzaga (#1) -- Zags/St. Mary's title game could be an instant classic in Vegas.
