CFP Playoff Committee shoehorns in Alabama at the last minute for the second year in a row ... this year with 3 losses...

I don't think it's ridiculous at all that Alabama is ranked ahead of Miami. Their 2 best wins, Georgia & S Carolina are far better than Miami's.

'Bama Strength of Schedule is in the teens. 'Canes SOS is the the 60s.

Miami has not beat a team currently ranked in the Top 25.

If others think Miami should be #11 instead of #12 fine...but all the outrage posts is this thread that believe this is rigged are just ludacris.

Both are marginal. I'm fine with giving more credit to better wins than 1 extra loss.

Hurricanes whiffed in Syracuse. Tough.
i mean it's interesting. we've decided that that win over GA is a really big deal. the same GA who needed a gift wrapping from the refs to beat tech, beat Kentucky 13-12 and Miss State 41-31 (who lost by 24 to Toledo), and for all intents and purposes is far worse than they were last year.

Every year gets harder and harder to compare conferences because of how few regular season games are played cross conference. The SEC has played a total of 19 games against other P4 schools with all games being a higher finishing SEC team than the Big Ten teams (TX beat MI, LSU beat UCLA but lost to USC, and Bama beat WI), 2-2 vs the B12 (FL over UCF, Ark lost to Ok St, OK beat Houston, ASU beat Miss St), and 8-3 vs the ACC (GA beat Tech and Clemson, Miss beat Wake, Mizzou over BC, S Car beat Clemson, Tenn beat NC St, Vandy beat VA Tech, Florida beat UCF and lost to Miami, Auburn lost to Cal, Kentucky lost to LVille).

Looking at it, there are almost no matchups of like teams under consideration against the SEC aside from the games with Clemson who's only under consideration as an auto-bid if they win. We have no idea who the "better" teams really are because you can only objectively really rate them in conference. Once you get out, there's next to no data points unless you good with translational logic which we know isn't remotely true in football given so much is dictated by matchups. It's a weird part of CFB because of the lack of consistent cross over (like if you had an SEC-B10 comp similar to B10-ACC challenge in BB it becomes easier). But instead we view data points like there's not a huge amount of variance that will be there due to lack of comparative data (this is everyone's problem because no one wants to schedule cross conference games that aren't guaranteed wins anymore) and so we walk in biased and go with the data we want to believe or that fits with what we think. It's part of this whole 12 team playoff really being silly unless you're giving everyone an autobid. Once you're getting down to teams 3-5 in a conference, they've already shown they aren't the best in their conference on the field so why should they get a second crack at it while you exclude others who don't play each other on the field in the regular season?

Regardless it doesn't matter because the committee will put in whoever they want and will drive viewership/dollars and justify it after.

Yes but Miami’s two losses are to a team that took Georgia to 5 overtimes and to a Syracuse team that would probably beat the hell out of Vanderbilt and Oklahoma

I get quality wins argument if a team has no bad losses.

Miami 2 losses against an easier schedule
But if a team has bad losses you can’t really say that bama would have two losses against Miami’s schedule. They have two losses to teams that are the same or worse as Miami’s two losses.

That’s what I don’t get about the whole conversation.
How do you emphasize quality wins but ignore bad losses?
You should be punished for losing to a .500 or worse team as much as you gain from beating a top 20 team.

If Boise state had beaten Oregon but finished 10-2 would they be rated higher? No way.

The other part that annoys me is that it comes down to SEC vs ACC
The SEC is better.

But bama shouldn’t go before Miami because Florida is better than Florida state
Bama shouldn’t go before Miami because people think Arkansas is better than they think North Carolina state is. But how good Florida, Arkansas, and North Carolina state are doesn’t matter…none of those teams are going. A conference doesn’t go to the playoff, a team does.

The best argument for bama is simply you think bama is better. That’s the only one that makes any sense. I can buy that argument but don’t necessarily agree with it.

I don't care what anyone says, mock me, but Army should get a bid to the CFP, blowing the doors off Tulane in the conference championship. Just cuz.

Lets be honest - greatness is more about message than about what one actually produces.

ESPN/CBS - for years benefited from SEC being marketed as the premier FB conference and the fact they only had to provide in in 1 or 2 games played on their home turf.

Fox - gained by having the B1G as #1 because they were original partners of B1G network.

We see it on the job and we see it in CFB - its more about what you can message than what is produced. While I do think that B1G and SEC are better - I do think this has happened because of messaging and money that has given these conferences the advantage

Lol. It's tough to argue with this.

In a way apropos to CFB when many CFB fans genuinely believe a grad of an Ivy, Stanford, UCB, Michigan is by definition better than a grad of MN or Oregon or Alabama. Maybe, maybe not. Sometimes you get some duds matriculated, passed through. See Alabama this year.

Wait! What? Notre Dame's in the top three ranked teams. Sorry folks them not being in a conference doesn't do it for me.

I wish we could go back to Oregon playing Penn St in Pasadena on NYD instead of Indianapolis on the first Saturday in December.

I would be totally fine if it ended right there.
Yes! That’s my kind of bowl season. There was something so meaningful about the goal of every Big Ten team to make it to the Rose Bowl.

Clemson barges their way into the CFP. So, the final two CFP spots are between SMU, Indiana, and Alabama.

5 Highest ranked conference champs
Oregon - bye lock
Georgia - bye lock
Boise - bye bubble
ASU - bye bubble
Clemson - bye bubble

Next 5
Texas
Penn State
Notre Dame
Ohio State
Tennessee

Bubble
SMU 11-2 (11-1 regular season)
Indiana 11-1
Alabama 9-3

Going to be fascinating to watch what they do with those final spots. It is possible that Indiana could end up being the odd team out in this scenario because punishing SMU for losing in their conference championship game would set a terrible precedent.

SMU and Indiana both benefited from really soft schedules and are lacking big time in the impressive win category. They also don't have bad losses either though whereas Bama has 2 of them.

Alabama SHOULD be the team that gets left out.....but will anyone be surprised at all when they get in?.....I know I won't be.

Indiana will be left out not SMU.
This better not happen. I think the eye test shows that Indiana is definitely worthy and is good enough to win it all. Yes, OSU handled them, but they also blew the doors off of everyone else they played.

There’s no way they can justify moving Alabama ahead of Indiana when neither team played.

Glad Bama didn't make it. Glad Indiana made it (for our bowl prospects).

Now let's get that Mayo!

Bring out the Hellmann's and bring out the best!
