Minnesota Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Golden Gophers miss from the Big Ten slate?

Here’s the positive - the Gophers don’t have to face Penn State. That’s a big deal this year with a loaded Nittany Lion team looking to be potentially special. Not having to play Maryland isn’t a bad deal, either. But there’s a problem, and it’s big.

Not only to they not get the relative positive of playing Indiana and Rutgers - they’re off the slate - they have to go to Ohio State late in the season before dealing with Wisconsin. That, and they have to face Michigan and Michigan State from the East.

Minnesota Football Schedule What Really Matters

The road schedule isn’t an untamable bear, but it’s going to make it next to impossible to come up with a massive season. The date at Northwestern is winnable, but that’s coming off a non-conference game at North Carolina - plenty of Big Ten teams don’t have back-to-back road games. It gets worse.

Iowa has been a thorn in the program’s side losing eight straight, and that’s a road game. Back-to-back games against Purdue and Ohio State in November - again, before playing the Badgers - isn’t easy.

Minnesota Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

A hot start is everything. Nebraska is going to be better, but that has to be a win in the Big Ten opener before September gets going. Get by North Carolina in Chapel Hill, and 5-0 is probably on the table before facing Michigan.

Even with four home games in five dates - there’s just that trip to Iowa between September 23rd to November 11th - it’s not going to be easy. Even so, the Gophers shouldn’t have a problem getting bowl eligible. Anything more than that with this slate will be a fight.

Go Gophers!!
