CFBS: Bateman opt out impact on Minnesota

Someone else will step up, a loss but who knows what will happen as the void gets filled.

I am not sold on DD yet,, but trust the two OCs, the TEs and the next WRs up.

It will probably just be more of a ball control offense this season. We ate big chunks of clock last year, even with the two NFL receivers. Expect a lot more of that. The TEs will definitely be more involved, and Tanner will need to move around a little more than he would probably like, waiting for someone to get open.

I think Morgan is good enough to sling the rock still. Ibrahim's workload just got bigger. CAB and Jackson are exciting... DD and Green have to prove it, they have been here a long time and not done enough.

WR is a position where a talented true FR can have an impact. if nothing else, find a speedy kid to run deep routes and force the DB's to cover them, thereby creating a gap over the middle to throw short and mid-range passes.

Granted, WR's like Johnson and Bateman don't come along every year, but if you have a strong running game, you don't need a superstar WR - you just need someone who can run a decent route and go deep often enough to keep defenses honest.

I still look at the schedule and think we have a chance to win every game without bateman, feels good to have a competive team unlike the days of playing 4 non conference cupcakes and hoping to get 2 big ten wins to get bowl elgible

Gophers will be competitive, unlike Purdue who lost Moore and is probably done now.

Kind of implied in the strong Running Game comment but a key aspect of all this is the QB and O-Line as well. If you have a really accurate guy like Morgan, protected by a strong O-Line you can take a bit of a hit in individual talent at a spot like WR without it being a massive killer to the offense. Morgan has shown an ability to make smart decisions so as long as he is well protected you just need strong route runners who will be in the right place at the right time for Morgan to get the ball to them.

I think with PJ's knowledge of WR's, he will find adequate WR replacements for the Gophers. I think we will be pleasantly surprised by a couple of our 5 freshman WR's.

This is not the Gophers team of old. The larder is not empty.
