Former Gopher football director of recruiting Bill Glasscock has worked at NC State, Texas, and Ole Miss since leaving Dinkytown. He's following the Lane Train to LSU where he will be well-compensated as the program's general manager.


I'm curious what GopherHole's collective knowledge is about how GMs fit into CFB operations right now? I'm specifically interested in how their responsibilities for the roster compare to the head coach's and how those responsibilities have evolved since NIL. Based on PJ's press conferences, he clearly engages with the financial aspect of the conversations, but it would seem like poor division of labor for him to get involved until the conversations are closer to the end stage.

For all of the discussions we have here about roster composition and attracting players, I find it interesting that we (maybe just me?) don't seem to know much about how the GM contributes to that process.
 

From what I've heard there are three kinds of GMs:

Those with power over the program, including hiring and firing coaches as the role entails in the NFL (Andrew Luck at Stanford)

Those with power over the purse and personnel, managing spending on players and/or other team resources. "Salary cap" and fundraiser guys.

Those with power over operations only, such as support staff and logistics and facilities (like I believe Chernoff is with the Gophers)

Some of these powers may overlap or have subordinate ops staff to handle them, like a football operations manager reporting to Andrew Luck.

Our guy Chernoff needs to learn how to put together a decent Windsor knot on his tie, lose the neck beard and mix in a salad. Maybe he’s a savant regardless with how the portal is playing out for us this year?
 

Chernoff's page says he "oversees all off-field aspects of the Minnesota football program" which implies he manages salaries and contracts.

If he's paid $400k a year which is top 25 in CFB, I would hope he's managing more than facilities and support staff.
 



if the gophers are looking Mr. Coyle, i'm happy to step into the role of GM. i promise i can convince all of gopherhole to donate as much as they do to this board to our NIL fund. I hear they all have deep pocketbooks but are waiting to see that we're serious about football before donating

LSU makes another wise financial decision.
 

Glasscock was visible while doing his job for the Gophers. He did a lot of interviews and the like talking about the program and gave fans a behind the scenes look. I'm not surprised to see him rising up the ladder.
Jedd Fisch, on the other hand....this guy? How does he keep rising up the ladder for big money?
Does he have any accomplishments? Other than his elite ability to promote himself.
(His name is top of mind because his QB is bailing on him after signing a deal at Washington)
