Minnesota, Niko Medved​

Minnesota's Year 1 success under Medved will hinge, in part, on how a couple of 3-point shooting forwards translate. Davidson transfer Bobby Durkin ranked sixth in the Atlantic 10 last season in 3-point attempts per game at 7.8 and hit 35.5% of them. Fellow 6-foot-7 forward Cade Tyson (formerly of North Carolina and Belmont) is also on the roster in search of a fresh start after a rough one-year stint with the Tar Heels.

The primary ball-handlers on this team will likely be returning sophomore Isaac Asuma, Northern Colorado transfer Langston Reynolds and Western Michigan transfer Chansey Willis Jr. Reynolds and Willis were mid-major bucket-getters but are not known as particularly great outside shooters. Thus, Durkin and Tyson will need to knock down their open looks. Grade: C+

3 pointers are definitely important, it seems its what the entire article is about!
I think they could have mentioned some improved athleticism and quickness at guard, a steady transfer in JCJ, and the length of Omot as a defensive weapon.

We definitely don't have the flashy transfers that Iowa, Maryland, and NC state's new coaches have. I'm looking for solid play, good screens, cutting, and hopefully shooting. Defensively, being physical while trying to force bad shots.

Niko recruited a lot of players with more than 1 year of eligibility for a reason. Try and be patient. Big Ten is quite deep now.
 





I get the need for content but still makes me chuckle that anyone thinks they can realistically grade a roster of players that nobody has ever seen on the court together before they play a single game.

So much of basketball is how the pieces fit together on the roster. We don't have the flashy transfers, doesn't mean we didn't get the right transfers though that will mesh well together and fit Medved's system well.

And to be clear....it certainly might end up being a C+ roster.......but essentially these grades are entirely based on style points in recruiting and that doesn't always translate to success on the court....(Rutgers last year would be a prime example).

I’d go B+. I like the length on the wings/shooting ability, guards. Everyone can always use more Bigs🤷‍♂️
 

He didn't get that goto clutch guy (I personally think it's because they were waiting on Dawson's verdict) so I won't argue with the c+ grade... medved has proven he can win with 'less tallent" however

In Niko's offense I could see Durkin playing that role- playing off of Reynolds, Asuma and Willis.

Clifford wasn't a go to guy a few years ago. Someone will step up.

Let's be real, they mostly "grade" by the name on the front of the jersey. It doesn't matter who we signed, the "research" would be "Minnesota? Meh give em a C."

This is oh-so-correct.

There was a last-season B10 preview from a Hoosiers perspective I revisited recently, and there were some big misses. For example, the Wisconsin preview talked about replacing Hepburn with Freitag and barely mentioned John Tonje at all. Not picking on the Indiana guy - that's probably what a lot of Badger fans thought going into the season, too. You just don't know.

It reminds me of how superficially the Strib and local media covered high school gymnastics when my daughter was competing. Any of us parents could have previewed the upcoming season for our class and conference better than that reporter did.

There is some definite truth to that. They also judge transfers a lot by the name that was on the front of their jersey last year as well.

This time of year we are just in filler season....people putting out lists and rankings based on little to no information just to get some content out there. It is what it is......I view all this stuff as for entertainment purposes only and don't put any real stock in any of it because it is all just guesswork until the teams take the court.
