In its annual "The United States of College Basketball: Top program in each state" CBS names the Gophers the top program in the state of Minnesota (yes!!!). In their analysis they state:

Minnesota: Minnesota Golden Gophers

Outlook: Amazing that a state as big as Minnesota only has one school in Division I for basketball. So the Golden Gophers win by default here, though we'll add that Richard Pitino could turn Minnesota into a top-30 program in the next three years.

Somebody should tell Shamorie Ponds that SJU plays second fiddle to Syracuse in his home state.

Yes, that puts this state on par with Maine, Vermont, and Wyoming with only one D1 choice. Even Delaware and New Hampshire have two D1 basketball teams.

This state is somewhat unique in that the powers in higher education have resolutely resisted attempts to add any other state schools to the D1 ranks (except for hockey, of course). Mankato, St. Cloud, and Duluth are larger than quite a lot of D1 basketball schools.

I've always thought that University of St Thomas would be Minnesota's most logical Division 1 upstart, especially given its competition with Creighton in other facets. It would make sense since the cost of upgrading a basketball program is less than any other major sport and would elevate UST's visibility.

But folks there don't seem to have much interest from what I've been told. One factor apparently is the perceived inability to get an on-campus venue given historical neighborhood resistance.

And #1 in Iowa is........Iowa St

And looks like Pitino Sr. is #2 in his state.

When the last two Dakota schools and Nebraska-Omaha left the North Central Conference and turned D1, there was some discussion about the conference's larger Minnesota state universities also exploring an upgrade to D1. From what I understand, the faculties were mostly opposed to an athletic upgrade.
 

I like it very much that MN has only one D1 FB and BB. Keep it that way.

There are only three of the DII schools that could realistically make a move: UMD, MSU and SCSU. I don't really see that happening any time soon, though.

St. Thomas is an interesting case, as well.

Isn't there an NCAA rule that all sports have to play in the same division now?

Considering UMD, MSU, SCSU and BSU are all DI in hockey but DII in everything else, I don't think so. Then again, there is no Division II hockey, so maybe the sport is exempt from a rule like that.

I think you can opt up for specific sports. Johns Hopkins is another example in lacrosse.
 





Yes, all teams have to play in the same division, except for one exemption (Not football or basketball).

In addition to the schools that compete fully as D-I institutions, the NCAA allows D-II and D-III schools to classify one men's and one women's sport (other than football or basketball) as a D-I sport, as long as they had been sponsoring those sports prior to the latest rules change in 2011.[8] Also, Division II schools are eligible to compete for Division I national championships in sports that do not have a Division II national championship, and in those sports may also operate under D-I rules and scholarship limits.

Did you know that Georgetown has a football team? FCS.

I believe their stadium is on top of a parking structure. Seriously.

They do have a large lawn at Georgetown over a parking ramp. The football field is not however.

They were grandfathered in after the rule changed. Same as D3 Colorado College Hockey. I think St. Thomas moving up is a geographic problem. Unless they get invited to the Big East it probably wouldn't make sense financially to do it. They could have built a much bigger arena with the $60 Million that they got from the Anderson's, but they like it in D3.
