The parallels between Russell and Jones seem obvious, however: very big guy, huge arm, moderately athletic. Extremely intriguing to an NFL coach who fancies himself a QB guru. Ryan Leaf also strikes me as a similar comp.

Teddy was compared to Willie Beamen...that character isn't far off from what Jamarcus Russell was.

RGIII was compared to Vince Young who's a Russell like figure.

The Russell comp isn't made because of their playing style because if you've watched the two while both big in statue and both having big arms..Jones showed far more poise in the pocket than Russell ever had as well as being more accurate and showing the ability to make a variety of throws (some NFL throws). Which is why he was such an intriguing prospect after just 3 games. The comps with Russell (As well as yours with Leaf) come from people's opinions of him off the field. When he's shown nothing to suggest he will have trouble with the law in the future. People are coming to conclusions about the person he is based on a tweet that he made as a freshman. He may end up being a bust but these are lazy silly comparisons.

I'm not gonna argue with you (this will be my last post on the subject), but here's my retort. You're welcome to yours...and you'll have the last word, as mentioned.

1) You said all Black QB's are compared to Russell. I said they're not, and quickly named 3 who weren't. You gave a good link to 1 who was (props to you), but not the other 2. I stand by my belief that they weren't widely comped with Russell -- nor are most Black QB's.

2) I can only speak for myself on this subject. The reason I'd comp Russell, Jones, and Leaf is their physical stature and atributes. That's it. Don't lump me in with idiots who try to judge the mental capacities or off-field behavior of people they've never met. I have no idea what kind of person Jones is. Here's what I do know:

Leaf: 6'5", 245 lbs, huge arm
Jones: 6'5", 250 lbs, huge arm
Russell: 6'6", 260 lbs, huge arm
 

The Leaf comp works on size (and perhaps in the mental part of the game), but Leaf was a more impressive passer at the college level. I'm old enough to remember Leaf's senior season at Washington State and there wasn't a pass he couldn't throw. He just couldn't make the leap.

You must be really old to remember his senior season, because he left after his junior year.
