CBS' Dennis Dodd: Coach Hot Seat Rankings For Every Coach in the Country

Ferentz goes from a 3.0 to 0.5. Is that purely contract based? Based on how this season is projected to go?

Ferentz makes too much money to fire and besides, does anyone believe Iowa could do better? I know he hasn't won them a national title, but he's made them a damn good team for pretty much this entire century.

From the Big Ten:

Beckman 3.5
Edsall 3.5
Flood 3.5
Hoke 3.5
Hazell 3.0
Pelini 2.5
Wilson 2.5
Fitzgerald 1.0
Anderson 0.5
Ferentz 0.5
Kill 0.5
Dantonio 0.0
Franklin 0.0
Meyer 0.0

I think it's likelihood of being canned during or immediately after this season. While a bad season might put him back on the hot seat next season, I don't think he has too much to worry about this year unless he goes 1-7 or 0-8 in the Big Ten.

Surprised to Anderson's number was reduced from last season. He was a first year coach last season and I didn't realize that Wisconsin considered the 9-4 season to be a positive to the point of lowering the coach's hot seat number. That being said, I certainly don't consider his seat to be warm or his job to be in any meaningful jeopardy.

I don't think what Wisconsin thought had anything to do with this number ;)

Ferentz and Kill are in very similar situations. Would take an absolute disaster for either of them to be in any jeopardy this season but a bad year this year could lead to a very warm seat going into next season.

Define "bad year"

If Kill goes 4 and 8 this season, in my opinion his seat is barely warm. Do it two years in a row then it gets "very warm".
I don't see 4 and 8 happening and anything better is not a factor at this time in his continued employment. So, if your definition of "bad year" is 8 losses each by 40 points or more...well yeah then his seat is "very warm". I Don't see it by almost any definition and 6 and 6 could be a very good year this year for the Gophers....depending on circumstances.

Strange to see Kill as more safe than guys like Pat Fitzgerald and Gary Patterson. In a hypothetical situation where Minnesota goes 2-6 in the B1G this year, he'd be 10-22 in conference play over four seasons and that four game winning streak last season would look like quite an outlier. Of course, the Gophers could also go 6-2 in conference play and that's a much better discussion to have.

Not that strange when you consider that NW has a fairly recent history of Big Ten titles. I can see some folks asking why that hasn't been repeated. Not saying it's rational, but schools don't always make rational coaching change decisions. (see: Brewster, Timothy).

EG#9 laid it out pretty good. A bad year would be winning 2 or fewer conference games. That wouldn't get him fired after this year but would make the seat warm heading into next year and a significant improvement in record would need to be seen at that point in order to ensure anything beyond 2015.

It would take an 0-12 / 1-11 type season for Kill to be in any jeopardy after this season and given the quality of 3 of the non-conf opponents alone I don't see any way that happens. So for that reason I think the ranking is right on, at the moment he is untouchable and as long as the team continues to show upward movement he will be in close to the same spot next year as he is right now. But if the team does take a step back this year you can expect that number next to Kill's name to be bigger next year.

Some folks (Maturi for one) were dying to get Edsall or Hoke. Lusting for Pelini.

None of us would trade Kill for anyone on the list. Including Dantonio or Meyer. Kill is custom made to lift Minnesota.

Probably based more on the last two years....improving from 4-8 to 8-4.

And, also probably based on the fact he took them to another New Year's Day bowl last year and beat both border rivals on the schedule (Nebraska, Minnesota).

It is doubtful Dodd's ranking is based on contract, since Ferentz's extremely high buyout lessens with each year that passes. So, the buyout was more when Dodd had it at 3.0 than it is when he has it at 0.5.

If we had to trade coaches with another B1G team, Dantonio would clearly be my first choice. Just like coach Kill, he seems to have all the bases covered.

Yeah I don't know how well Meyer would go over here but I would make a trade for Dantonio. Franklin at PSU is an interesting one as well.

Fitzgerald has a train wreck of a season and is a 1.0. Northwestern must be a terrible place for a passionate fan.

Look for the Hoke's AD to open up the rolodex after the gophs leave Michigan with the W.

Dantonio and Kill are my type of coaches. Defense first. James Franklin is an arrogant used care salesman. He really rubs me the wrong way. Hoping Perv State completes the Hindenburg this year.

I don't think they have any passionate fans at Northwestern.

I'd put Pellini higher than that. I think it's very likely this is his last season with the Huskers. I didn't think he'd survive last year.

Really? I like Kill and now that he's been here for several years it would be tough to trade him with anyone, but Meyer or Dantonio have a history of success at the major conference level and would be considered upgrades by nearly anyone in the country.
