Casey O’Brien undergoing surgery for spot on lung.

Sorry to read that. I balled when I saw that story. What a great kid.

Please also say a few prayers to my wife and I. She has cancer and I am struggling with my own health issues.
Sorry to hear this Hungan. Hope you and your wife can recover. Also cheering like hello for Casey. This young man deserves a long life as well.

To the Hungan family, the O'Brien family and all the others who have not said anything who are having health issues, we all will keep you in our thoughts and prayers. Row the boat indeed. We don't know where it will lead you, but we know that you're trying, keeping the faith, and doing what you can to make each day better.

God Bless.

per Megan:

"I met with Casey earlier today and he shared the news with me, as he does after each scan," coach P.J. Fleck said in a statement. "Casey is the strongest young man I have ever met, and I know he will recover from this as well. He has an entire team, community, state and all of college football supporting him and rowing the boat with him."

ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit tweeted: "Thoughts and prayers Case. Your story and attitude are an inspiration for many. Can't wait to see ya back on the field."

Go Casey!!

I’m so sick of cancer, took my Grandpa at 73 and my Dad at 52. I hope to God Casey can get past this and say goodbye to it for good. Too many good people lose to this crap, Lord be with you Casey O’Brien.

Ugh. A spot on the lung is like a knife in your soul.

Hoping you the best, Casey.

Tough break but sending healing thoughts to Casey n Hungan family.

Did anyone hear an update on what they found out on the spot that was removed?

Nothing official, but with his history and the fact that there was presumably no spot 3 months ago on his last scan, I would be shocked (very, very, happily shocked) if it were not cancer related.

Best case it is something like a calcium deposit or scar tissue.

When I was in my early 20s i had a chest x-ray to rule out pneumonia and it showed a spot on my lung. Since I didn't have any concerning medical history like Casey obviously does, they took a wait and see approach and x-rayed again a month later to make see if it had gotten bigger. Longest month of my life. Spot was the same size and they called a calcium deposit and left it there.

I had the exact same cancer as Casey, I am certain we have the same oncologist and everything. I still fly back and go to the same doctor for my check ups. I went through all of this (3 month scans, spots, spots being removed, etc.).

You're right, most likely it was cancerous but that is how battling this particular cancer really goes. I had several surgeries on my lungs and it's actually a good sign that they were able to do the surgery right away. If the spot is large or in a worse spot, they would have needed to have done a more invasive surgery and likely would have taken longer to decide the proper course of action than they did with Casey (remove of full node/lung, etc.).

So, it's bad news and I feel awful for the kid. But I was happy to hear that it was the kind of spot where he could have surgery right away and be up and moving pretty quickly after the fact.

Good luck Casey!

Football is just a game when you look at real life situations of people who have cancer and other tough issues.
