I have been a New York Jets fan for over 40 years. IMO, there is nor has there ever been a more frustrating football program at any level to root for. Since 1969, there has been high hopes for success just to have them dashed unexpectly, usually when they are about to win. To be a NYJ fan is living a slow death every year, waking up in September and doing it all over again....you just can't help it. A NYJ game is never ever won until the game is truly over...despite the score! Until now....maybe! (LOL)
Having removed this off my chest, watching the 2009 GOPHERS reminded me a lot of my NYJ. Full of promise, tons of talent but enough blame to go around as to why they are not winning more. Its either the wrong coach, the wrong QB, the wrong "Nugget" and on and on. Like my NYJ, winning football is such a learned art and it takes a lot of "fan" patience to see players progress mentally while losing games. In the end, this is what makes winning all the more satisfying! This team has too many weapons to deny itself..too many weapons to defend.
In 2010 I expect, just like my 2009 NYJ (who went to the AFC Dance) and lost to a better team (something I can live with) that our football team this year will be more focused and offensively more prepared with a more simplified game plan (Hmmm, sound familiar). Jedd Fisch's offense was extremely complicated for these kids to execute. With our new OC and another year of experience, I expect this team to adapt, challenge themselves and will themselves to overcome. I believe these kids are tired of playing .500 ball and want the spotlight all to themselves. I truly believe that not only will they beat the crap out of Wisconsin and shock USC AND Penn State @ home later this year, but to seriously challenge Ohio State who is looking down on us and the rest of the Little 10 Conference from their perch. Someone once told me its good to be the King! Well, from what I have seen lately, its about time and its OUR time to have a taste of what its like to own the Big Ten.....again! The talent is here and the winning is now!
2010 is going to be a fantastic football year! Its our time and we deserve nothing less. My only question to so many of you GOPHER fans.....can "youse" guys handle the success?
