Coyle took a worthwhile risk with the Whalen hire. It didn’t work. He made a move and hired a Power 5 coach that had regional ties and who’s now 15-1 and doing very well in recruiting.

Can Coyle pull an existing P4 coach to come here? Womens team has same facilities as men’s, yet Coyle pulled a nice hire. My only hope is he can do it again.

The Men's program won't get treated as well as the Women's program for numerous reasons. There is a strong misandry (hatred of men) directed at men's athletics. You see it in the way the administration went along with Kim Hewitt's (then director of the EOAA office) unprovoked targeting of Jerry Kill and the football program in 2016 to dismantling the Men's Gymnastics and Tennis programs under misinterpretations of Title IX.

The Ivory Tower has arrow slits in it for a reason. The main narrative is that they are for defensive purposes, yet any arrow fired from them does not carry a label denoting its purpose. The only real purpose the arrow has is whether or not it hits something.

Very true. There is a deep-seated hatred of men's basketball within the leadership at the University of Minnesota.

Wait, so Coyle is going to be leading the search? We are gonna fire our coach?

I think he certainly can make the right hire. Like most people with their jobs, he has some hits and some misses. I know there is context around those misses and hits but generally (IMO), he seems to be competent enough at his job.

The truth is that the bar is so incredibly low right now that improving the program will be easy. There are very few names I've seen floated around outside of Sam Mitchell or Ryan Saunders that wouldn't be competent.

Nearly every other school had our same situation and came out better than we did. Blaming our situation on losing players is dumb.
Many of the players from last year have seen similar productivity but an increase in wallet size.

Ola-Joseph Same 7.5 ppg and up about 3 minutes a game (7-7 team)
Carrington Up 3.5 ppg and up 8 minutes a game (6-9 team)
Payne down 6 minutes a game and down 2 ppg. (12-2 team)

We would have been much better with guys playing a third year together. Instead we couldn't fill the shoes and are looking at a rough season sitting at 8-6.

Yeah the sad fact is, even a mediocre coach at this point would be a step in the right direction...

I don't think Coyle will have anything stopping him from hiring a better coach (again very low bar) the question is who wants the job and do they have the right vision for what this team can be. I will bet more than a few good coaches will be interested.

Name ONE other team that improved by 7 conference wins without any seniors (and without paying any of them previously)...and then had 3 of their top 4 players enter the portal and leave for big money...without spending anything to replace them.

You think the women’s basketball team has better NIL? You’re just searching for an excuse.

Is the question better NIL than the Gophers MBB players or in comparison to other comparable WBB programs? I have no dog in this fight. I'm just curious.

I don't trust Coyle.

any coach looking at the MN job will want to know - how much NIL is available for the program and how much revenue-sharing will men's hoops receive?

and Coyle's answer will be - Fleck will take what he wants, and you get the leftovers. that will be the end of the interview.

In the end, the next coach will be from a mid-major program after any name coaches say "hell, no."

(hey - I could be dead wrong. maybe Coyle is a brilliant salesman who can convince a top coach to take a job at a school where his program will always be second fiddle to football. but I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for that to happen.)

Sure thing Reusse...

No! I have no idea what the relationship between Sid and Charlie was. Can you tell me?
Between Sid and Charlie Walters? Competitive as hell with a very fragile respect, although Sid did tend to look down both on Shooter and the Pioneer Press in general. I know this because I once worked in media relations for one of the local professional teams and interacted with both of them daily.
