Cal names True Freshman as Starting QB.

I like the schedule too, but I am worried about Buffalo. That could be a good team, and a loss would put a damper on the season like nothing else could. We will need a good game from Drake. He needs to be ready to play... and play well. But I agree with your stance on all this. Could be an ideal situation for him.
Doesn't matter if it's a win like Georgia Sourthern or SDSU in 2019 ... just win baby :)

I completely disagree. I dont think Drake needs to be ready to play or to play well.

It seems like if there is ever a left handed QB anymore, he's of Polynesian descent. I know there are drastic differences in left handedness throughout the world - Mexico and Korea are like 2% and the US and most of Western Europe is like 12%.
Interesting. I didn't realize any place had even more than 10%

Correct. Also has another brother at BYU named Tiger Bachmeier, a WR.
So he has a sister named Ella.....fairly normal names for the two of them, and then the parents apparently just started naming the kids after animals. He has 3 brothers Buck, Bear, and Tiger..... lol.

Cal and Stanford are in the ACC? I wasn’t paying attention to the off-season

Not really, Cal is a 3 point dog in their opener @ Oregon State.
Not trying to be sassy but citing a home team as 3 point favorites as a reason for them not being a cupcake is kinda funny.

ORST is ranked 82 in FPI and if they didn’t play WAZZU twice they probably wouldn’t make a bowl. Cal and ORST both aren’t very good.

ASU fans not fans of those four that didn't go to the Big 12? :)

Sure, but you're changing the argument. Most people wouldn't describe Oregon State as a cupcake opponent.

I’m not. I said they’re a cupcake and you said they can’t be because they’re 3 point favorites at home.

Books give the 3 points for home advantage when they think it’s a toss up game. The fact the line is set there against a decimated Cal team starting a true freshman speaks volumes. You bringing up the line only supports my argument.

They are likely one of the 4 worst P4 teams this year. Although there is no objective definition for “cupcake” but that has to be close.

I like your style. You understand the gambling lines and what they mean very well.

Road game at night with a two-hour, unfavorable time zone change for the Gophers. Cal looks to have a very good FR QB--who beat out a tOSU upperclassman transfer. And has some star power elsewhere ... but supposedly has some exploitable holes on defense. I assume part of the Gophers' defense in this game will be the TOP strategy, keeping the ball away from the Golden Bears offense and beating down the Bears defense with bruising offensive play (ideally with a few explosive pass plays mixed in).

As PJ has unfortunately shown in previous years, the TOP strategy--which limits the number of offensive drives (i.e., opportunities) in the game--is successful against a worthy adversary only if you come away with seven points on the majority of your infrequent trips to the red zone. Against Buffalo, the Gophers looked good tee to green, but failed to sink the makable putts. If they suffer the same red zone yips against Cal, the Gophers probably lose--even if the win the TOP game. This is shaping up to be a very revealing game for the Gophers. It will be great to see RS FR Drake L matched up against Cal's true FR star QB. Hopefully, Anthony Smith & Co. will live in the Cal backfield, making life miserable for the Cal QB.

I'll be in the stands pulling for the goods guys! Can't wait. Go Gophers.

I think Collins will ID his tendencies and limitations and the defense will be ready. We'll probably give up a few big plays because mobile guys are so dynamic, but I anticipate we'll do enough to put pressure on their offense to keep up and he'll make freshman mistakes. We aren't Oregon St, we're a Big 10 program with a perrenial top 25 defense who will have two games under our belt and two weeks of video to pore over. Time and travel might be intangibles not in our favor, but there's no excuse to lose this one.

Appreciate your analysis—we’re also making the trip—hinge game.

The good thing is we will have a few games of tape on him to start to get a feel for his tendencies and what freshman mistakes he might be prone to making (they will have the same for Drake unfortunately).

Watching that game, the kid certainly has talent but the announcers went way overboard with how they were talking about him. He has a chance to be really good but hopefully we can throw some things at him he isn't ready for and force him to make some mistakes.

Game is probably a tossup where Cal will be a small favorite. Should be a good test for the team as they get ready for the start of conference play.

That kid is a gunslinger. They will throw it 50 times and force us to cover it. Big game for the young boys back there. Ryan Burns said we should have 2-3 more healthy bodies back there by week 3

He definitely threw some into very tight coverage and let his wrs fight for some balls. We should have opportunities for some interceptions. A lot of his easy and effective completions were on little swing routes ran out of the backfield, I’m sure Collins will try to take those away.
