Part of the problem the U has had was doing gold/maroon outs when the weather was cold because people just don't have cold weather gear in U of M colors. Cal has the weather advantage so should be much easier to get fans to dress in a similar color. It took a LONG time and several attempts for our gold outs, maroon outs, and stripe outs to work enough to even look like gold outs, maroon outs, and stripe outs. I wonder where Cal is in that process? I remember one year (Must have been around 2010-2011 or so), the wife and kids and I all got some gold gear for a gold out and I took a video with my caption "Everyone is excited for today's gold out" of a group of about 35 people walking by the front of buffalo wild wings - All 35 dressed in maroon.
I get what you are saying and you are correct. But, when we started the gold outs, nobody paid attention, flat out. I think the true defining moment was the 2019 Penn State game. People were so jacked, and despite it being a November game - pulled off a maroon out very well. Ever since then, they have been smarter about things in terms of what games they choose for gold outs (warm weather), and how they promote it. People seem to have turned the corner and play along now. That said, I'm sure a raining or an abnormally cold game would cut the percentage of participation.Part of the problem the U has had was doing gold/maroon outs when the weather was cold because people just don't have cold weather gear in U of M colors. It was like that at MN for YEARS. I was to the point where I advocated just giving up on the idea. People argued every time that Minnesotans were far to independent to follow directions on what color to wear to a football game. I ended up being wrong as the 2019 game between 8-0 MN and 8-0 Penn State proved that Minnesotans could follow directions like that after all when they were pumped for a big game. These things have gone "okay" ever since then.yeah we'll see. as a cal fan, we're not good at following directions for stuff like this. i've always loved the idea of a gold out (and also love doing it when gold is one of the visitor colors), but unless cal gives out 30k shirts/ponchos, i think its pretty unlikely to really work. i'd love to be wrong though
They have definitely gotten way better at planning and promoting them. The early attempts were pathetic on all sides and got very little buy in.I get what you are saying and you are correct. fan engagement seems to be on the up, largely on account of gameday last year and the calgorithm. who knows, perhaps we'll pull it off. just don't expect a scene like what you see at penn state. or auburn, where all the ladies had matching white dresses when i went to that game last year. you could never get 20-30,000 female cal fans to do that lolIt was like that at MN for YEARS. To contrast Cal I think we go all whites, or maroon/white/whiteAre we going full banana for this game?
