The Bulls have fired Tom Thibodeau and the white-hot word in Chicago (and nationally) is that it's Hoiberg's job if he wants it. That would be a great thing for the Gophers, especially on the Amir recruitment front.

I just don't quite get the appeal with Chicago. Rose has chronic knee issues. Pau Gasol turns 35 in July. Noah is on the decline. Taj Gibson will be turning 30 soon. I love Jimmy Butler and I think Mirotic would fit well in the type of system he runs, but he isn't the greatest defender. Money does talk though I guess.

Living and coaching in Ames, or Chicago? Hmmmm.

And that's before you even factor in the money, no recruiting, and the chance to coach at the highest level.

On the other hand, Hoiberg can probably coach in Ames as long as he wants. In the NBA, even a coach with a winning record can get fired. The Bulls just fired a coach who has won 50+ games every year.

So Freddie has to weigh more money against more pressure, the possibility of getting canned for not living up to expectations, and the family issues. Not a slam dunk in my book.

Except that more money is essentially guaranteed even if he gets fired (Tom is getting $9m not to coach next year) and he can go back to college at any time to most schools he'd want. Ames would take him back with open arms I'm sure.

It's not like he is from Ames or anything...

He is one of the top names when any NBA vacancy opens up. I don't understand why he would rather go to Chicago, where the talent is on the decline, than wait it out and find a better fit. Hell, I would rather coach an up and coming team like the Pelicans than Chicago. As long as Lebron is in the East, he's not going to get to the finals anyways.

Hope the Twolves can entice Hoiberg to come here.

Bulls' GM Gar Forman was an assistant at ISU while Hoiberg played there and the two are apparently close friends, so I would imagine if The Mayor is going to make a break for the NBA it would be to work for someone he knows and trusts (plus, he played 4 seasons with the Bulls so he's familiar with Paxson and Reinsdorf too).

And the chance to reunite with and coach RW. Oh the joy

Apparently Freddie told a potential recruit (per KFAN) that he couldn't guarantee that he would be at ISU next year. I think it's already a done deal that he's going to be the next coach of the Bulls.

I know many are wondering where I stand in this discussion. Here it is:

I think, maybe, I don't know. What's more, I don't care. But that's just me.

Momentum seems to be continuing ...

I would be very happy if Hoiberg leaves Transfer U. Both in terms of getting him out of our hair with respect to recruiting Minnesota players (even though he STILL has not beaten us out for any local recruit, you have to think it would happen at some point, given his connections here), and also because ... SCHADENFREUDE. Who can forget all of those Transfer U trolls visiting our board during the Rashad Vaughn recruitment. They love Hoiberg, and anything bad that happens to those losers is a good thing in my book.

Minnesota has such an inferiority complex... Why do we care about Freddy Hoiberg? Exactly who has ISU gotten that we have gone after? Is it because they are successful BBALL program in armpit Iowa and we keep telling ourselves that the Twin Cities is sooo much nicer???

My interest in Hoiberg begins and ends with how his status affects the recruitment of Amir Coffey and whether he'll be a Gopher. If he leaves ISU that can only work in our favor; if he stays that will make our coaching staff's task more difficult. For that reason only I hope Hoiberg leaves Ames, otherwise I don't give a sheeet.

I was gonna say the same thing. I'm mostly interested as far as it relates to Amir Coffey. It seems to me like Iowa State is our biggest competition for him, and if Hoiberg leaving takes away Iowa State's appeal, I'm for it. I also think Iowa State has competed with us for a few other local recruits like Matt Thomas, Rashad Vaughn, and Jarvis Johnson.

Matt Thomas is a good answer, we did recruit him.

I still think our interest/hatred/envy of Hoiberg and ISU have gone back longer than Amir.

If we could just develop a consistent program they shouldn't be a problem. Better city, better conference, better everything.

I could also understand some bitterness about the Royce White situation, although the U and Royce himself are probably more to blame for what happened there than Iowa State or Hoiberg. Still, he was probably our best recruit in the last decade, and it didn't work here, but somehow it worked there, enough that he was able to parlay one year of college ball into being drafted in the first round. God, imagine a starting lineup of Al Nolen, Blake Hoffarber, Rodney Williams, Royce White, and Trevor Mbakwe.

Plus there's the whole "Transfer U" thing that I know some people kinda hate. It does seem like there have been multiple players that have messed up in some way or another at their first school who end up succeeding at Iowa State.

It depends on your definition of success. There have been a number of players who have somehow managed to stay eligible and play out their remaining eligibility at ISU despite being dismissed elsewhere. Successful on the court, I guess.

I just have found the ISU fans to be obnoxious since Fred has been there, and had some success. I'm sure if Fred leaves that they will expect to replace him with Coach K.

Fred has strong ties to MN and is a good option for local recruits. That's the main reason I'd like to see him leave.

Aaaaannnnd, The Mayor is gone from ISU. Amir, keep it at home in maroon and gold!
