Five facts to know heading into Week 5 of the Big Ten football season

3. Minnesota has had a hard time scoring points, especially against teams who haven’t been great defensively. Although they posted a season-high 27 points in their win against Ohio last weekend, it marked the eighth consecutive game dating back to last season that the Gophers have been held to 28 points or fewer. Perhaps it can be attributed to the offense’s ability to get things moving? Well, Minnesota has gone three-and-out on 32.7% (18/55) of their offensive possessions this season, which is the highest mark among all “power conference” teams. And even when they do get the offense in position to score, they haven’t been able to cash in consistently. The Gophers have scored on just 8-of-12 appearances inside the red zone this season, which is currently tied for the ninth-worst mark in the nation. Only four of those scores have been touchdowns.

28 points wouldn't be very Minnesotan.... don't embarrass yourselves Gophers!

You may have been going for sarcasm but for anyone that is curious here is what that 8 game stretch looks like.

4-4 overall
1-2 in the Big Ten

Wins over Nebraska, Colorado State, Kent State, Ohio
Losses to Ohio State, Wisconsin, Missouri, TCU

So... losses to the national champion, the B1G West champion, the SEC East champion and the Big 12 co-champion. All were very tight games, with the Gophers within one score in the fourth quarter of all four.

I'm impressed with, and encouraged by, the progress the Gophers have made over the past four seasons, and look forward to the times when they win those games.

What you say about the loses is true however the flip side to that is that all the wins during that stretch were also extremely tight games that could easily have ended up as loses. And the resumes of the teams we beat are not nearly as impressive as the resumes of the ones we lost to.

It is no secret that the offense needs to play better for the team to get where it wants to go. Hopefully they build on the Ohio game and we can go into games knowing we have a reliable offense to go with our very strong defense and usually solid special teams.

Sometimes you just can't win making such a ridiculous post. Don't you realize all the losses were inept and were actually blowouts? The wins were too close to bad teams and must be discounted because we should have lost them. At least there are some here that view everything that way.

Actually for me it's more fun to think of a bounce here, a call there, and not too far-fetched to get to 8-0. This program's style is going to be to play close games, at least until the offense catches up to the defense and special teams.
