3. Minnesota. It’s good to have a senior starter like Mitch Leidner back under center, but he has something to prove coming off a foot injury with a new coordinator in Jay Johnson, who is looking to bring more balance to this often-plodding attack. There is no shortage of quality backs with sophomores Shannon Brooks and Rodney Smith back after strong debuts. They could be one of the Big Ten’s top 1-2 punches.

Go Gophers!!

Soory but Huskers backfield is NOT better than the Gophers.

They spent most of the blurb talking about our QB instead of our stable of powerful RBs. Nice work, Dienhart!

Very weird IMO to do backfield rankings (QB and RB combined).

Maybe, but I remember reading similar rankings when AAK, Barber, and Maroney were the Gophers backfield. Makes more sense when you think of old school offenses and terminology. Quarterback, halfback, fullback. All backs in the backfield.

Throw in Tapeh and that was a helluva backfield

I doubt Wisconsin finishes 5th.

A backfield is only as good as the OL.
Not necessary, Cobb was a beast behind an okay at best line. Thank god for his ability to fall forward after contact. I always wondered what he could've done behind some of Mason's lines, but usually I'd agree with that

Actually, I think salzie is a Hawkeye fan. A decent one at that.

I'm hurt

Proud gopher fan

I'd love to see Wisconsin finish 5th but I'm tired of hearing their demise is coming and they roll off 10 wins.

Smith and Brooks are impressive three down backs. They catch and run well and can be match up problems. I recall Brooks getting loose down the sideline for long completions last season.

We have big power backs for short yardage situations (and fourth quarter lead-protecting burials) in McCrary and Johannesson. Our line is strong, getting stronger and appears to be coached well under an impressing Bart Miller. This could be a special group the next couple years if Johnson and Claeys can implement their overall vision (which has yet to be revealed).

Sorry, I hope you will have mercy on me and keep the flogging to a minimum. There was a Hawkeye fan back when Rivals and the Gopherhole were one that was named Salzie. My bad. I am wincing since I know this beating will hurt.

I'd add Femi-Cole. I believe he will get the fumbling thing resolved.

Before my time. I only recently signed up

Didn't realize I stole someones name

The system let you have it, so I say it's all yours! EVERYTHING looks better in Maroon and Gold!

Hopefully not RUTM.

Stats and the way Armstrong and Newby sliced and diced our D last year would suggest they are better than the Gophers.

Armstrong?? I thought this was the backfield. Also one game does not make a season.
