I can't quote too much from this, go to link. This below is mostly coaches talking:

"“As long as we are consistent in catching the football, we can throw the ball to run the ball,” Fleck said. “We can move the ball just like a run through the air, and our running backs have the ability to do that, our tight ends, our wideouts. The shorter passing game, at times, different play-actions and (run-pass options). It gives us the ability to do that.”

Offensive coordinator Greg Harbaugh said the Gophers want to complete approximately 90 percent of quick-game throws, and Fleck acknowledged they have gone away from that aspect of their offense when it has fallen short in previous seasons.

“It’s starting to become part of our DNA,” Fleck said Saturday. “They feel it is a part of the run game. That is what you want in the pass game.”

Harbaugh added the Gophers seek a completion percentage around 35 for deep throws.""

Great! We couldn't do that with AK

Consider me discouraged. This is the kind of stuff they said before game 1 last year which resulted in us throwing 44 times for 196 yards and we all know how that went.

PJ is not the type of coach that can successfully run a short passing offense. This is a BAD strategy for him. It works when you are committed to it with an air raid offense or a coach who isn’t super conservative.

Either Darius Taylor will take over and mask our passing deficiencies or will have an inefficient offense that can’t convert in the redzone and struggles to make big plays.

this is necessary for a team that aims to control the ball, move the chains, and doesn't have a bunch of deep threat receivers

Give it a couple games before deciding.... Maybe?

AK had little to no touch on short throws, sounds like that won't be an issue with Brosmer. A competent passing game will go a long way towards helping the run game.

You didn't even directly mention it... and I'm going to have to schedule another therapy session and talk about that pass in the Illinois game again ...

Well AK was not good so ... yeah it went badly.

PJ & Co did not come back this season with AK for reasons.

Max Brosmer - he is going to make noise with the Gophers. PJ Fleck must have wised up and got a QB with great experience.

sounds like more 13 play scoring drives

That would be great!

Football is a game of emotion. I wonder how the opposing defense will feel when they're jogging off the field after giving up a 13 play scoring drive to Brosmer and the Gophers; not great, I'd imagine. Meanwhile, their team mates on offense will be looking up at the game clock and wondering if they'll ever see the ball.

I have read your post 10 times and I am not sure what it means exactly. We shouldn't emphasize the short passing game because it isn't a good fit for PJ? So does that mean you want to just run the ball? Many here would say that is all PJ does so that approach is obviously a better fit for him. I guess maybe you have concluded that since we are talking about short passes, then the long passing game must not work well with Max at the helm? And I guess you have concluded from this article that we clearly have a deficiency in our passing offense, and that Darius will be our only option for effective conversion inside the Red Zone. But by definition, the only other way to score in the red zone is the short to medium passing game. But you say we should not focus on the short passing game. I'm lost.

But count me as encouraged.

Well done, Max. Looks like Fleck sent Max to his tailor with that slim fitting coat. Can't decide if he looks like a young Chris Cornell or a young Captain Morgan...maybe his TD celebration can be the Captain Morgan pose?

Can't unsee that guy sitting in the backgound...

it's a tried and tested formula for beating MAC teams by a TD

Yeah those long drives, sometimes in the 3rd you watch a team grind out half the quarter and score ... game over man.

Gophers have done that in the past, it works.

Have you watched much Gopher football in the Fleck era? I think you may have skipped a few big wins. That's too bad; they were fun to see. Spoiler: they weren't all wins vs. MAC teams.

Is the short passing game not what helped open up the long game during the 2019 season? Like, sure it wasn't our go-to, but having those short throws over the middle (and, admittedly, two future NFL draft picks who could add yards after the catch) meant defenses couldn't just sell out on preventing long passes to stunt our passing game.

Last year we tried to incorporate that more, but as many folks have pointed out, AK seemed to not have the touch for those throws and many were either slightly off target or thrown too hard and dropped. Getting those plays back is a step back toward a more cohesive passing game IMO.

I mean sure....some might argue that it is better to actually see it on the field before giving up but where is the fun in that? :)

I wouldn’t say Kirk ran a short passing game. I’d say he ran an intermediate one that had a lot of options off 10 yard slants. Last year Harbaugh’s offense featured a lot of 5 yard deep stick routes which give little opportunity for YAC. Kirk’s slants, on the other hand, keep the runner going downfield and led to a lot of YAC.

Simply put, I don’t like our strategy. I would be much more encouraged by a focus on the intermediate passing game and play action. However, I don’t think that is the offense that Harbaugh runs and I think that article confirms that.

I hope that Brosmer can successfully lead this attack but it gives pause that the same classless idiots on this board that are hyping Brosmer and making fun of AK are same idiots that bought into AK as the future last year at this time.

Brosmer's good stats are somewhat shorter passes than typical, high completion percentage, efficient, and some bigger plays, not a bomber type..

I think the whole idea of this new short passing game is just to get DT the ball more and in different spots. Brosmer thrived with the short game at New Hampshire because he was throwing to an NFL draft pick.

Is DT a future NFL draft pick?
