Brooks, Holland, Gentry, Richardson

Brooks - He is coming back from injury. My guess is that there is probably a bit of a conditioning issue, there often is with guys who are returning from a foot/leg injury. Brooks should have gotten the ball more, but I am not surprised at all that he wasn't immediately made into a work horse.

Doesn't really make sense the whole coming back from injury thing if he's been in three games now. If he is that fragile why bring him back for Colorado State in an actual game where he could get hurt? Supposedly the timeline was to have him back about then... now three weeks later he is still not back? He certainly was running well...

Maybe Smith is a better combo with pass blocking. However if Brooks is you best back it should open the play action more.

Holland - He has the drops and has been outplayed by the guys higher than him on the depth chart.

Gentry - Injury prone and has been outplayed by people higher than him on the depth chart.

Richardson - I am not sure what the question with Richardson is. He plays all the time and is one of our best players.

To clarify the Richardson reference was to the depth chart habit of listing him as a backup. This goes along the same vein as starting McCrary over Smith and Brooks vs Iowa for only one carry, limiting Brooks the last few games. It seems there are some odd dynamics going on behind the scenes with the coaches. It's certainly possible Brooks has some conditioning issues but he isn't running marathons. These are short bursts of anaerobic exercise and he's a young man. I certainly hope his fracture was 100% closed before he played.

Just venting some frustration. Looking forward to a win on the road this weekend.

Coaching is a good old boys club and similar to how it was with Kill a good portion of Mason's offensive staff was tied very tightly with him so they have bounced around a lot. I have a feeling that if Claeys gets fired the same thing will happen to the majority of Kill's assistants as well because they have been so tied to one coach for so long.

Browning may not be a genius but it is really tough to argue that he and Shaw didn't have a great deal of success as the offensive line coaches while at Minnesota. There were plenty of shortcomings with the program during those years but one thing you usually didn't have to worry about was the running game being effective with great backs running behind a really good offensive line.

RS1 is, without doubt, better with pass protection - but that isn't a good enough reason for me to accept SB23 getting so few carries. I'm not buying the "slow back from injury" thing either or he wouldn't have played the last 3 weeks in a row, IMO.

They are limiting Brooks because of his foot. Don't want to over work him.

If true (doubtful), this is really, really stupid. If he's hurt, don't play him. If he can play, feed him the ball as much as possible. We need to win football games and can't afford the luxury of treating our best players with kid gloves.

It's bizarre. Half of GopherHole bitches about "accepting mediocrity", while the other other half clamors for the return of Mason (fired almost TEN YEARS AGO) and guaranteed sub-mediocrity. Have people worked in a lot of organizations where people wistfully long for long-fired employees who weren't good in the first place?

Coworker of mine tells me all the time about how their previous job(s) didn't have **** like this.... but they quit those jobs so I doubt it.

I agree with this

I've been missing and begging for this since Mason. We've gotten so hellbent on blocking like Sconnie that we've become inept on
the offensive line for years now... need more guard pulling and pancake some LBers. Use our quick guys to trek and go.

We don't have Wisconsin sized lineman with strength that can just maul people and knock people off the line or swallow them up. We need to have people that can move and use quickness at least until the staff has had enough time recruiting those types of lineman and they grow up those massive mauler types like Sconnie uses.

Just curious how many years it is going to take for the staff to recruit and develop those lineman? The move from Kill to Claeys is not the reset that you get when you bring in an entirely new coaching staff.

It's possible and if true it's smart. Not all injuries are binary.

New offensive line coach and offensive coordinator

Just curious how many years it is going to take for the staff to recruit and develop those lineman? The move from Kill to Claeys is not the reset that you get when you bring in an entirely new coaching staff.

This coordinator likes to run pistol and speed option. The line coach likes to hit people and dominate at the line. This change in philosophy from the Kill regime replacing Limegrover is why I think we brought in three JUCO offensive lineman, not just that the young guys were not ready but they wanted to try and be Sconnie like or the mauler mean nasty types now. It's going to take 1 1/2 to 2 years to start growing the types of lineman and recruit the kind of depth they want just to crack the two deeps.

I fully expect more JUCO defensive lineman to be brought in because of this issue. Even though Claeys is somewhat a continuation of the Kill culture, it is my opinion with the Coordinator and line coach brought in that he wants to change the type of offensive play the Gophers have. The looks this year and the type of blocking they are asking for to me is noticeably different than the Kill years. This is really a new head coach with a new offensive philosophy in my opinion it is not the same as coach Kill. I don't think they want to stay conservative but continue to try and be more explosive in the years to come. They are still recruiting speed on the D side and expect the linebackers to make all of the tackles that philosphy has stayed the same, but the offense has not.

Gordy Smith - now offensive line coach at Houston. Probably a better job --- except this week.

Derek Warehime is the offensive line coach at Houston. I'm not sure who Gordy Smith is.
