Brilliant open letter from the MN Epilepsy Foundation President to Jim Souhan

Souhan intended to stir up controversy and hopefully force people to lose their livelihood, because that's the garbage human being he is. Instead it has had the effect of galvanizing our fans like I've rarely seen before. I'm now rallying even more fervently for Jerry to succeed, if for no other reason than to make Souhan and his ilk feel even smaller and more pathetic than they already are.

I'm generally a lot slower to criticize the local media than most of us are, but this really was a pathetic article by him.

This. What a beautifully written logical letter, that probably took 100 times more thought and time than the original column by Souhan did.

Agreed, What a well written letter. Bravo.

The initial idiot responses created perfect straw men for sensible people to shoot down.

The idiot responses are: 1) Epileptics have no business leaving the basement and nobody should ever have to see them. 2) Epileptics can do absolutely anything and everything they want to, and nobody has a right to ask questions.

Anyhow, here's hoping Jerry finds a good solution to this problem.

If he's going to keep having seizures and it would help, I think he should.

Not going to argue about it anymore. Get well coach!

That you never indicated in your OP, Studwell. You gave an absolute directive. So now, I see you are backing off a little bit, but your OP should still have never been made in the first place.

RR, I sure hope you are right about this. The TC media needs some turnover, and hopefully this jackassery (is that a word?) by Souhan can get that ball rolling.

No, but dou_chebaggery is a word and it works here!

Your OP was a real dik move and it won't be forgotten by me any time soon. You and Souhan can high five about it at the "I'm a proud dbag committee" you two co-chair with fatpat as the treasurer.

If I were you I'd quit arguing about it too. Every time you do you remind everyone of what an ass you were with your posts in the other thread. Perhaps you should register with a new moniker. Your old one is mud.

Good grief, an attempt to be reasonable is met with incomprehension.

I give up!

If people really want something to happen with Souhan call the Strib and cancel your subscription. When they ask why you're cancelling, politely tell them because you will not support a newspaper that chose to publish an article like the one Souhan put out. Be polite but firm.

Once you no longer have a subscription, don't go to the website. Then tell your friends to do the same.

Let them lose their advertisers until they either can Souhan or go under.

This. The Star Tribune really doesn't care about ethics. They care about money. If you hit them financially, that is when they will take action.

Souhan will never lose the dpodoll award after his stupidity:

In the words of the Great Dpodoll: "congratulations on reaching an epic-heretofore-unheard-of-level-of-dumbassery" .

Anyone ever read the story of Esther? Remember that guy named "Haman" who plotted to kill Mordecai and all the Jews in Persia...and remember how his plot backfired on him? Well...Mr. Souhan...you've cast yourself in the role of Haman...not wise, sir, not wise.

Tiny, where I come from, the word "sir" is reserved for a man of character and moral fortitude. Souhan does not deserved to be called "sir".

So noted and I apologize for my mistake!

I didn't see this mentioned anywhere else (forgive me if it is) but the national Epilepsy Foundation website has this open letter: http://www.epilepsyfoundation.org/news/We-Stand-with-Coach-Kill.cfm
It's very well written and addresses a lot of the misconceptions the media has put out regarding epilepsy.

I like how it mentions that Jason Snelling of the Falcons scored their game-winning touchdown this past week - and by the way, he has epilepsy.

You can function in society with epilepsy. No question. Does it impair your ability to do certain jobs? Yes. Does it impair your ability to be a big ten football coach? Depends on if you think not being able to attend all the games is a material impairment. I suppose some level of missing games is acceptable. The question is where is that level. The souhan discussion has become a big distraction from the true issue.

You know whose fault that is, it's Souhan's, it was and is a legitimate concern, but he just couldn't resist taking his typical pot shots. I take medication for seizures, I don't have full blown epilepsy, but I know to an extent what Kill goes through. It is a legitimate question that Souhan, but it's one thing to have a discussion it's quite another to throw insults and poke fun at people who do everything they can to manage their epilepsy.

“It’s become clear after what seems like a thousand emails and messages that many readers not only disagree with what I wrote about Gophers coach Jerry Kill, they believe I was insensitive to his condition and to other people with disabilities. Believe me, that is not my view, and that was not my intent."

His 'apology' flat out sucks. He clearly states that in his view he was not insensitive. He has to "try it again" so all us stupid over sensitive people can understand his pearls of wisdom. Unreal. Someone should start a fire Jim Souhan page on facebook. If I knew how I would.

Excellent well written response. I hope Soupcan gets the hint that everyone is tired of his act as well as other unnamed members of the media. I think this letter goes to a few posters here as well.

Boyum's response was perfect.

I hope Souhan also realizes that Boyum is a better writer.

A bit harsh. I totally support kill. Didn't agree with Studwell's post on kill needing to move to the booth......but to say his name is mud is harsh. He has been a quality contributor to the gopher hole for a long time.

Also top notch letter by Boyum. Well stated.

This conversation is becoming unproductive due to hyperbole (or worse) from all sides.

I respectfully disagree. Brett Boyum's letter is beautifully written and makes a necessary and important statement. It moved me greatly. I applaud the public outcry over the insensitive Souhan article. I believe, as Mr. Boyum implies, that it was a calloused effort to create readership without regard to the damage it caused those who suffer from epilepsy. I believe that Mr. Souhan owes Coach Kill and everyone else who suffers from epilepsy and apology. As I have said before, I believe that Coach Kill should be held to the same standards as any other coach and be judged by his performance: not speculation that is inconsistent with his past success as to how his medical condition will affect that performance.
