Brewster's only media availability this week is today... was producing our 6p and 6:30p hits... but just listened back to what my photojournalist got.

**IF Royston plays vs. MTSU, he'll be very limited... maybe Kim's dad can chime in with more... he has been doing more in practice... but Brew won't put him in unless he's 100-percent.

**Kirkwood, as if it's a surprise at this point, will definitely get carries vs. MTSU

**Something is up between Brew and Marcus Fuller... Marcus asked a simple K. Cooper question, and Brew mocked him, "Sometimes I wonder how long you think of these questions. Son of a gun." All Marcus was looking for was a simple quote. Not worded the best... but there has to be something up there... that question alone could not have just set Brew off.

**no story on Wright not playing last Sat.

**appreciated the heat again today... said again he expects it to be very hot on Sept. 2 in Tenn.

**On Manuel: "He's gonna be a good player."

Did he say above average heat on 9/2/10?

Thanks for the synopsis, Doogie.

Any idea if Fuller was the one who asked about Wright at the post-scrimmage presser? Brew seemed peeved at that question...might be some carryover from that?

That is my hunch as well.

Believe so... was just told that Brew got mad at Marcus on Sat. If his question Sat. was as simple as, "Why didn't Wright play?" ... what is wrong with that? Perfectly legit question.

It wouldn't bother me one bit to see the Gophers turn the corner this year and have the TC media frozen out. There has to be alternative sources that are Gopher friendly.

The person asking the question made some reference to the possibility that Wright may not be eligible or had been flagged by the clearinghouse. That was what set Brew off. He took umbrage to the allegation that Wright may be a NQ.

Might have something to do with one of Marcus' recent blog postings where he said Cooper has been developing slow and he wasn't impressed with any of the linebackers at the scrimmage (minus Rallis). Personally, I thought Cooper looked good at the scrimmage and I imagine the coaches feel that way too. Considering Cooper is entering his sophomore year and is already starting (at a minimum a top backup), I can't see how you could say he is developing slow. Sometimes Marcus seems to pull things out of the air based on really nothing (perhaps to get a rise out of the fan base or coaches - who knows).

I believe you are correct.

Personally, I would've asked that question in a one-on-one setting, not at a press conference.

Fuller: "Your freshman RB's. I didn't see Edwards out there or Devon Wright. Is there any update to those guys?"

Brewster: "No. Both of those 2 guys had a little bit of a nick. Lamonte has had a little bit of an ankle (injury), he's got a little bit of a shoulder (injury) right now. Same thing with Devon. Just nicked up a little bit at this time in training camp."

Fuller: "Was Devon out there today?"

Brewster: "Was Devon out there today?"

Fuller: "I didn't see him out there."

Brewster: "Devon was with us this morning. He wasn't on the field, no. But he was there."

Fuller: "Ok. Is there a situation with him at all? With him being able to continue forward with the team?"

Brewster: "Absolutely not. Why would you even bring that up?"

Fuller: "Just wondering if he was out there."

Brewster: "Absolutely. There's no issue whatsoever with Devon Wright."

Sorry, not my place to comment on the status or availibilty of gopher players.

That's what I was thinking. If Fuller's question implied that it's a fact that Cooper hasn't been progressing well, I could see why Brew would be set off.

Fuller seems to be kind of a dink and an agitator, like many in the local sports media, especially when it comes to covering Gopher Football.

Makes sense to me

I'd be short every now and then if I had to deal with the intellectual infants in the media day in, day out. Wow. That would try my patience like nothing else...

It's sad that they have to go right to the "is he in trouble" card if someone isn't on the sidelines. I can't really blame Brew either. Maybe he is Brew's Myron P. Medcalf?

Personally, I would've asked that question in a one-on-one setting, not at a press conference.

Exactly!!! That, and perhaps Brewster knows that Marcus already knows the answer to his question and is mad that he's bringing it up just to make a scene.

I'd be pissy, too if I slept on a mattress in my office for a month. Maybe Coach Grumpy Pants should take a nap.

He asked a question that the coach did not like?? Well, that should not be allowed. Indeed, all questions should be submitted in writing a week prior and the coach should only have to answer the ones he likes.

I don't think the issue was solely about not liking the question. It was more about asking a question about something to which Fuller already knew the answer. Or it was about Fuller trying to stir the pot on a non-issue.

From how it sounds, Fuller more than likely had a lead that Wright was a NQ and picked a bad time to try and get Brew to talk about it. I also heard he had some clearinghouse issues, but it might have stemmed from Fuller's comments at the press conference.

As if Brewster is some kind of a Mental Giant.

Remember...Perception is reality and likely Brewster perceived a "dig" in Fuller's question. Only Fuller really knows if one was intended.

There were apparently rumors circulating on Saturday morning that Wright was flagged by the clearinghouse. I seem to recall someone asking MV about it during his live chat of the scrimmage. So this didn't start with Fuller.

I tend to agree with Doogie that the question about Wright being a potential NQ would have been better addressed outside of the full presser. I have zero problem with the question itself, though.

My favorite part was when he said he only reads the stuff written about the Gophers in the bathroom.

I have listened to two post practice interviews recently. Its obvious that most scribes know very little about football and they focus primarily on roster questions. Put a couple of HS football coaches or ex players in the mix and that would be certainly provide and interesting Q & A session. After awhile, I too would loose patience while answering the same duh questions over and over again. But that is what HC's must do as the scribes are the ones with the recorder. And bore the informed fan who takes time to watch.

I have a problem with the question. What kindo f journalist asks a question based on a "rumor" without looking into that rumor first? Is it fair to the kid to put in this kind of question mark about his eligiblity if it isn't true? If I were Brewster I would be mad too. If you have anything of substance, ask the question. If not, do some investigating. Just throwing it out there in a press conference is stupid.

Twenty-four(sorry:( posts and over a 1,000 views because of this?

Even Wren was compelled to post on it!

Boy, I can't wait until the season starts!

What is being missed is players have the right to confidentiality. Coach has to be careful not to speak out of turn or risk exposing the university to liability. Also, what if there is a chance it could be worked out? There may be no need to bring it up. The media is quick to jump in everyone elses coolaid but when its one of their own (jeff dubay) their understanding and respect for confidentiality improves.

Note: I have no knowledge what so ever with regard to this situation.

Its Coach Brewster's duty to "protect" his players. The scribes find ways to expose them. Brewster saying it is a non story is not what scribes want to hear but it needed to be said. Maybe coach should pull a certain reporter aside and tell him the way it is.

Perhaps the coach should realize that it is not the job of the reporter to help the coach to manage the flow of news around and about his program. "Keeping all the news positive about the Gophers" is not the job of the media. Once the relationships go sour, it will get even worse. Time to kick off the football in a real game. Then the result will dominate the news.

That's why "its a non-story", "no comment", or "next question" is all that needs to be said.
