Brewster says Gophers quarterback job is open

Yeah, it's a competition between Weber and Sanity. Sanity is also very good friends with Brewster's Job Security.

It'll be interesting to see who wins out.

QB job this spring... The winner is........

Marquis Gray.! Weber and Moses will battle it out for 2nd string.

Couple things to note:

1) None of the QB's have an effective grasp of the system, but hopefully the new coordinator will resolve that issue.

2) Weber is experienced, but one dimensional and inaccurate. He's adequate at best.

3) Gray is highly talented, but appears to be too shy to lead the offense. With understanding of the offense, may come courage and leadership. He has potential, but we may never see how much.

4) Alipate is somewhere in between, and a year more time to prove himself. Though I don't see him playing this year, I'm feeling more and more that he -- not Gray -- will be our QB in 2 years.

At any rate, should be a very interesting position battle. Still, the OL and RB will be the true decider of the offense this year.

He's not too shy, he's too careless with the ball.

Weber will start unless he gets hurt or completely implodes, which--you may disagree--is unlikely. The scenario this year will be Gray in for various series, not single plays. Weber is in for 80% of the plays. No doubt.

"Brewster said the winner of the quarterback job would play all game; there would be no switching out for situations, as Brewster did with Weber and Gray last season." - From John Shipley article in the Press/Patch

Is this really feasible? Or smoke?

Agree. That is the most likely outcome.

yep. weber will most likely be the QB.

he is a good quarterback (no matter what some would say on this board) and having horton at the helm will, i think, give weber the offense he needs to succeed.

If the QB's think they can come in and play part-time, they won't have to try as hard. If they are told "all or none" for playing time, it encourages them to give it their all in practice.

I can't believe for a second that Weber will not be the starter this season. I think Brew is doing his best to motivate all 3 QBs, but if he is true to his word that the starter will be in place come fall practice-well, I find it hard to believe that a 3-year starter would be surpassed during 15 spring practices.

Did you watch the Big 10's statistically worst qb consistantly miss the most basic routes last year? It should not be a surprise if his spot is taken. He may be the favorite but Weber was consistantly bad last year.

Gray will look like he is going to win the competition but at the last minute he will fumble away the job.

Gray needs to prove he has fixed his fumbling problem and that he can read defenses. Add in a little bit of increased accuracy and 2010 looks to be exceedingly Gray.

I wish Brewster wouldn't set timetables. I'd rather he said, "we hope to have it resolved in the spring." If someone distinguishes themselves, then fine. But if Weber is shaky and it's close, lets let it get settled in the fall. It certainly didn't hurt Becky last year.

Everyone banging the same drum with their predictions. I still say Weber wins it based on that it is a new offense, and he already has experience reading defenses, and absorbing playbooks.

Most middle School QB's could surpass Weber. He sucks royally, I hope he would be a man and fake an injury for the good of the team.

After the absolutely atrocious 3rd down efficiency from last season, I sincerely hope the competition is open and remains that way until Fall practice. Give the other guys as much of a chance to stake their claim.

This team is 6-6 or worse with a senior QB and Brewster is fired.

I wonder if he realizes his job is on the line this season. If he does, Weber will either be vastly improved or riding the pine pony.

"I wonder if he realizes his job is on the line this season."

Probably not. You do, but our head coach, who has been around football virtually his entire life, has coached several years in the NFL and no doubt seen a number of his colleagues sitting on the hot seat, he can't tell if his job is at risk.

all you weber lovers need to come off the kool-aid and realize that weber sucks. he was serviceable for the time that Number 7 was here, though as evidenced by when decker was out, he sucked absolutely horribly to the point of having his own fans boo him on MULTIPLE OCCASIONS and spur the student section to chant for gray. Gray may not be the answer, but going through another year of weber is going to do our football team no favors

This is the silver lining of the 2010 season: if we stink Brewster and Weber are gone, and we get Kevin Sumlin- I mean a new coach in here- Kevin Sumlin- who can actually- Kevin Sumlin- coach. If we have a great season then it means Brewster finally follows through on all the promises he's made...and probably leaves for a bigger job. Which means we still get Kevin Sumlin. And Weber is gone.

I like to call that a win-win!

I'm guessing you are that type of fan!

I think this says more about our fanbase than Weber's ability.
All you Weber haters need to chill and realize that Weber's ok, not great, not terrible. He's been serviceable for three seasons and has fought through really tough circumstances since his freshmen year. Coaching turnover, offensive system turnover, lack of blocking, lack of weapons, number 7 going down last 2 years. The week after Decker went out he put up 400 yards passing, he didn't "suck absolutely horribly", he followed that by being really inconsistent against IL, and bad against SDSU, and average against ISU.
BTW I've said Gray will win the job for 2010, but get off the Weber bashing wagon, it's really getting old and it's just not classy, and also quite frankly Weber doesn't deserve the vitriol he gets from half the fanbase who expect him to be frickin Peyton Manning. He's won 13 games the last 2 years and lead his teams to back to back bowls. He takes responsibility when the team loses and gives out credit to others when they win. He'll compete for the starting job and I have no doubt if he is beaten by Gray, he'll do whatever he can to help the team win.

I agree, I just don't see Gray proving himself a better all around QB than Weber in a few practices. However, a somewhat similar situation a few years back in Ohio State turned out the other way, choosing Pryor instead of Beckman. I don't think Pryor did much better than Beckman would have the first half of the season; do you agree? Coach Vestell decided he was gonna go with Pryor and just deal with the rookie mistakes as they come because he knew it would pay divedends later on. Maybe Brew just needs to go with the future now no matter how much it may hurt at the beginning.
