Brewster Names Horton Offensive Coordinator

University of Minnesota head football coach Tim Brewster announced today that Jeff Horton has been hired as the Golden Gophers’ offensive coordinator. Horton is a 22-year veteran of collegiate coaching. He has spent the past four seasons in the National Football League.

“I’m thrilled to have Jeff Horton join our staff,” Brewster said. “He brings tremendous leadership and experience running offenses and coaching quarterbacks. I think he’s a tremendous teacher in all aspects of quarterback play and offensive football. His overall knowledge will help make this a seamless transition for our players.”

Horton began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Minnesota in 1984. He is looking forward to being back in the Twin Cities.

“I’m really excited about the opportunity Coach Brewster is giving me here at Minnesota,” Horton said. “I started my college coaching career here 26 years ago. I’m coming back to a great city, a great university and a program that is really starting to take off. I’m proud to be a part of it.”

Horton coached the quarterbacks for the NFL’s Detroit Lions last season. Prior to his stint with the Lions, he spent three seasons (2006-08) as special assistant/offense and assistant offensive line coach for the St. Louis Rams, where he worked under head coach Scott Linehan.

Prior to his time in the NFL, Horton spent 22 years in the college ranks, including serving as quarterbacks coach at the University of Wisconsin from 1999-2005.

During Horton's seven years at Wisconsin, the Badgers won the 1999 Big Ten Championship and the 2000 Rose Bowl. Horton was instrumental in the development of quarterback Brooks Bollinger, who led the Badgers to a 30-12 record over four seasons. Horton's quarterbacks hold the first-, second- and fourth-best career passing totals in school history.

From 1994-98, Horton was the head coach at Nevada-Las Vegas, where he earned Big West Coach of the Year honors in 1994 after the Rebels won the 1994 conference title and the Las Vegas Bowl.

In 1993, he was head coach at Nevada, where the Wolf Pack had the nation's top-ranked offense that season. He also served as Nevada’s wide receivers coach in 1992 after serving as the assistant head coach at UNLV from 1990-91.

Horton served as an assistant coach at Nevada from 1985-89 and helped and helped lead the Wolf Pack to Big Sky Conference Championships in 1985 and 1986.

A native of Arlington, Texas, Horton graduated from Nevada and earned a master's degree in educational administration from the University of San Francisco in 1993.

Brewster only said tremendous twice! So far that's the most worrisome thing I've read about our new OC.

Well, it's official anyway. I've read all the posts, read his bio from both St. Louis and Detroit, understand he's a long time coach and must be pretty good at it. But what keeps holding me back is that he's never had any official OC or Asst OC positions. I realize that at many places the QB Coach is very involved with the offensive planning and implementation, but it's not a given and not quite enough to convince me. I'm sincerely hoping that someone here will show me the light.

It is my understanding he called his own plays during his head coaching jobs.

Studman...It will be stamped "Return to Sender" adding "Due to Lack of Interest!" :)

I approve of the choice.

Nice job by Tim Brewster, just as Ted Roof was a great hire two years ago.

I just hope

that during the interview process Brewster could get some kind of assurance that he will be around for awhile. We cant stand any more coordinator changes for awhile. I know you can never be sure but that better had been a key component of the interview. I wonder if it was for Fisch and he didnt live up to his word.

I think it's a great hire.

Doc, I think the principal component of the hire should have been "Can he do the job?" Because if he can't do that, Brewster may not be here to keep Horton around for awhile.

Of course He will be here a while, who else is going to hire him? Unfortunately I think Brewster just signed his own death certificate with this hire. This hire was a total dud, what happened to Gunter Brewer or Josh Heupel, or even Jim Zorn?

Let the hire play out. You may be pleasantly surprised. Stability was likely a large factor in the hire, in that Brew wanted a guy that would be here for a while. Guys like Brewer and Heupel, on the "up-and-up" sort of speak, may have been one or two years and out. Yes, he was not the sexiest of hires, but ala Cosgrove last year, I think the results may be impressive. Just a hunch.

Your dislike of the hire actually makes me like it more.

LET'S GO, JEFF! GOOD BYE, JEDD!!! :)
Jeff Horton looks to be an excellent hire for Tim Brewster and the Gopher football program. I am happy to see that Brewster acted quickly and decisively to fill this vital position with someone with experience as a head coach (although not too successful), play calling experience, worked under a great coach, Barry Alverez, at Wisconsin where he helped to develop Brooks Bollinger, Jim Sorgi, and John Stocco, three pretty good quarterbacks who managed to beat the Gophers with great regularity, and worked for a great offensive coach, Scott Linehan at St. Louis and Detroit. This past season he was the quarterback coach for Matt Stafford, the Detroit Lions, talented young quarterback, who displayed tremendous improvement over the season under Jeff Horton's coaching, one could assume. Horton's background information indicates that he has coached the spread offense, the pro style offense, and the Wisconsin smash mouth offense. Now, all he needs are five starting linemen who are willing and able to block in unison, a few receivers who can actually run a pattern and catch the ball, at least two running backs who can run and actually find the open hole, and the real Adam Weber, of sophomore year, who has not been screwed up by an incompetent, first-year OC trying to change his passing motion which had worked quite well for him since the day he became the starting quarterback as a freshman at Mounds View High School way back in 2002. As the Beatles used to sing, "All you need is love, and Seantrell." O.K., I made up that last part, but you get the idea. We need a little more talent to move the pile and keep our quarterback alive. Good luck Mr. Horton, and GO GOPHERS!

+1

I think we're going to be real pleased with this hire. Some of the problems you mentioned are precisely why this hire is so good. It's one thing to see the problem and the way it should be, it's a whole different thing to be the agent of change and teach. That is the difference between a Fisch and a Horton.

The REAL Adam Weber is the Adam Weber we have been seeing. He completely sucks. He is tough and was good as a runner but as a QB he has no accuracy and no decision making skills. His ineptitude was responsible for at least 3 losses. The only way I am OK with the Horton hire is if he told Brewster Weber will not see the field ever again (not that he ever "saw" it before).
