Braeden Carrington: "Before Ben came I never would have went to the Gophers."

2. Johnson isn’t superior to Pitino Xs and Os wise.
What??!!?!
The Gophers under Pitino ran no offense.
Or rather, this was the offense:Dribble dribble dribble one pointless pass dribble second pointless pass dribble dribble uh oh no time jack up 3.

Did you, even once, see an inbounds play from Pitino's Gophers that made you say "whoa...that was well designed?"
I sure didn't.

Pitino sucks at Xs and Os. It's his worst charactistic.

Depending on his roster he ran a couple different forms of motion. He was a little extreme in allowing his primary ball handler to have such an extremely high usage rate, but his stuff wasn’t unique. When he had Murphy and Oruro he ran stuff that Self runs. I know people who know Pitino and they will tell you he’s very strong with schematically. He’s poor at recruiting, building relationships, and getting team buy in. Those are likely Ben’s strengths.

Your right, it is not as though he has zero coaching ability. Whether or not he is a capable D1 coach is debatable as his record in the Big 10 was among the worst in history for those that got 8 years. In his new job he got them from 11th to 10th in year one.
Personally I feel his roster management and development was his downfall more than his in game coaching

Though others say I underrate the talents of Hurt, Konate, Elliot eliason, etc

I sure did. And I will support Ben to the end as well. Both were put in a tough situation based on their experience and track record. I hope Ben does much better.

This is great news to hear from a local kid.
You called Ben a "diversity hire" right out of the gate and you grandstanded about demanding a refund because the U had the audacity to ask you to wear a mask during games. You'll be the first one out the door if Ben has another tough year on the court.

If Johnson ran one set play per game, it would greatly outpace Pitino's record in that regard. Pitino the Younger's offense looked a lot like Pitino the Elder's in that it was point guard centric with a lot of dribbling and just as much standing around.

That is one measure of minimal improvement, you are correct. But they went from a team in the 350's in the NET Ranking last year to 165 to finish year one. I think they'll get into the top 100 this year.

No doubt they improved. I just view his overall body of work as mediocre to horrible. Wins , conference place is another measure. There is nothing to suggest that he is a good coach to me.

Richard is a really good guy, funny as hell, who belongs in front of the camera instead of in front of the bench. I think that's where he will land after the New Mexico gig. One of the posters suggested that he was strong schematically. I saw no evidence of that over his eight years here. He had a few good players (Murphy, Oturu, Coffey and one or two pg's), but no really good teams.

I can't stand the "Little Ricky" crap. That stuff is a reflection on the couple of immature posters who have misplaced anger issues.

Pitino is a below average D1 coach who is a good guy. He was hired by a douche of an AD (who is worthy of derogatory nicknames), based on his last name. He was extended by said douche on his way out the door. None of that was his fault. I'm glad he's no longer the gopher coach, but I'll root for him wherever he ends up.

I agree that he would be better in front of the camera than as a head coach but what makes you think he's such a great guy? He treated a select few of his players like garbage. Just because the guy has the gift of gab (which may be somewhat culturally inherited when your family is both eastern and Italian American) doesn't mean he's a nice guy or particularly smart.

He had the best team since the Final Four team. His team the year after was on track to be even better until they were derailed by injuries. That was the turning point in his career here.

Which players were those?

My biggest struggle with Pitino is we never seemed to have an offensive identity, we often looked lost in the half court game and many times it was just guys taking bad 3 after bad 3 and then Pitino saying after the game that he wished they wouldn't take so many 3s (at least this was how it was at the end of his run).

Even with the injuries and roster issues you could see what Johnson was trying to do on offense last season.

With Pitino it often felt like a collection of solid players that didn't really gel together for one reason or another. To early to say what Ben's teams will look like long term but I am hopeful he can assemble a roster that works well together.

Knowing Xs and Os and designing a game is one thing. Getting your team to implement that plan is another. That's where Pitino struggled the most. There would be brief stretches they would look good, and then it would just all fall apart. He couldn't get the team to really implement the plan, and did little to hold them to it - on both ends of the floor. Further, he rarely made effective adjustments. That's where Ben and staff have demonstrated a great level of superiority to Pitino. They adjusted well during games, and when playing a team a second time.

I'd rather not get into it at this point. All that could do is spur another pointless argument about whether my opinion on this is right or wrong or whether Pitino was justified or not.

I hear you. The NIT title is probably his most notable achievement. Nice turnaround after I Thomas at the Florida school. Big Ten Coach of the Year. but everything is a spurt...nothing sustainable.
He is unorthodox in several facets of basketball coaching but he has success for weeks to month long stretches on occasion. Overall for me the overall body of work is certainly mediocre but I just get the feeling he's going to have a complete season somewhere along the line.
Like you I'd be surprised if he had two seasons in a row but there are guys who just can't coach at all and I don't see him as that. He has had multiple highs, again for short streaks. He is not like too many other coaches in his pattern.

And most of this board supported Pitino until the very end…but will now pretend they didn’t.
Until the end no? Later than most yes. COVID bought him a year.

I was ready to move on that year

Let’s get into it at this point. Which players did he treat like garbage and how did he treat them like garbage?

So you’re making it up

Not at all, at least according to me. I stated my reasons for not wanting to get into the subject. Unlike you, I don't get any particular enjoyment from being involved unresolvable multi-page arguments or maybe I've finally grown tired of that sort of thing.

Well, the prima facie evidence of that is that he never managed two consecutive good seasons. Most coaches can manage to put together some rosters that are good enough to generate some successful years but the special ones can assemble teams capable of producing seven or more good years over a ten year period.

Don't depend on me to generate your interests. Post something interesting yourself.

Are you serious? Unsolicited, you say Pitino treated his players like crap and then you want to take the high road and not talk about it anymore? That’s like sucker punching someone and then running away.

Highs were not high for me. Coach of the tear was coming off a historically bad year he was responsible for. Those get validated by winning multiples or winning national coach of the year. There are worse coaches. It IS NOT PERSONAL. Just nothing special about his body of work or how he goes about his business.

I don’t think your argument is with me?

Who the hell did I "sucker punch?" Pitino? He doesn't post here.

I didn't say "he treated his players like crap." I said he treated a select few players like garbage. By the way, in the original post, I asked why the poster thought Pitino was such a nice guy. He never answered that question but you don't see me nagging him about it like some pansy ass. I figured he had his reasons.
