Average Finish: 2/3rd

Bob's last three seasons:
Conference Winning Percentage: .555
Average Finish: 3/4th

You literally cannot argue that Bob inherited a mess and that he should not be fired. We have been significantly worse to end the Motzko era than we were to end the Lucia era. The state of Gopher hockey is in worse shape for the next coach than it was for Motzko.

The "mess" that Motzko inherited was not a bare cupboard of talent. It was the majority of the fanbase had checked out. Week in / week out, Mariucci Arena was rarely even half full (actual attendees not tickets sold).

Stagnant achievements on the ice. Fan revolt over moving from the WCHA to the Big 10 diminishing regional and intrastate rivalries. Toxic combo.

Oh I agree. I'm not defending Lucia or advocating for anything with him. I'm just saying that our "mess" was the mess of a world class program that had 6/7 conference Big 10 championships and missing the tournament was still an anomaly. It was a "mess" in the context of a great Gopher hockey program. It wasn't the post-Ben Johnson basketball program.
