Hat tip to Gopher07 who found this link, but I felt it deserved its own thread as opposed to the UW hiring thread.

Per the link:

According to Clay Travis, Volquest has confirmed that Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini has reached out to Athletic Director Dave Hart to be the head coach of the Tennessee Volunteer football program.

Go Gophers!!

If it ends up happening, the Big Ten would lose both head coaches from the teams representing each division in the CCG. Both to middling SEC programs. Ouch

Yes, that would definitely hurt a bit. But, with the money the SEC programs are throwing there way, can you blame them?

Wow. Very rare that you hear reports about a Big Ten coach reaching out to another BCS school about their head coaching job. Kind of stuff happens behind the scenes quite a bit I am sure but seems like it is almost always kept really quiet. This can't be playing well in Cornhusker country.

And after watching Pelini and his staff get completely outcoached/outclassed in every way imaginable by Bielema and his staff, I'd guess there's more than a few Nebraska folks who wouldn't mind seeing Pelini leave.

I beat Bleed to a link.

As much as it sucks for the program they leave behind I never fault any coach for doing anything they can to get paid because they are one bad year away from being kicked to the curb by their current administration. If they can cash in somewhere else they are foolish not to take it.

more dough and less 'ahem' restrictions on athletes attending class = SEC. coaches dream.

Not surprising. Despite all Pelini has done for the program, their fans think they should be a top 10 team every year. Tennessee would show him some love...

Not quite that equal. The coach almost always gets paid his full contract, fired or not.

Wow you have to believe this is a big PR hit for Bo. Getting smoked by Wisconsin in a game most thought they should win now reaching out to another university? Wow wonder what the Husker faithful think of him right now.

No F-ing kidding! When Pellini's teams gave up 52, 62 and 35 point his first year all we heard was how that was done with Callahan and Cosgrove's players. Self-Congradulatory pats on the back all around down there when those scores didn't appear in 09 and 10. Last year opposing scores of 38, 48 and 45 appeared.

This years score of 36, 63 and Seventy were given-up by that Defense. How Pellini and the Cornhusker Faithful dump THAT on Callahan and Cosgrove will be interesting to see.

They won't (or at least, many of them won't try). Huskers are starting to get sick of Pelini ... at least four losses in every season since he's been there, no conference championships. Teams like Ohio State and Michigan wouldn't stand for that (and have fired or pushed coaches out for less; see Cooper, John and Carr, Lloyd). Nebraska doesn't feel like they should stand for it either. Now, with no Osborne to protect him I can see things going south in a hurry.

You are correct that depending on the buyout most head coaches will come out ok when fired financially however at that point they have to go out and hunt for a new job and face the uncertainty of finding a great opportunity. It all comes back to loyalty or lack there of. The administration has no loyalty to the coach so the coach has no loyalty to the school. Both sides use each other and get along when the program is winning but as soon as things go bad the first person kicked to the curb is the coach and if things still don't get better the AD is not far behind.

For about three years until they run him out for not making them a top 10 team.

The grass is always greener.

Dooley last 3 years in Tennessee, they have some expectations themselves.

It might be that Pelini reached out to Tennessee in order to orchestrate a nice pay raise for himself at Nebraska.

Few have to "hunt" for a new job. The vast majority are offered jobs without applying.

I think that pretty much kills the recruiting for the Huskers.

If so it may not be a very wise play. It sounds like some people in Nebraska are down on him enough that they might tell him to go ahead and leave.

Head FB Coaches are way over paid. Really need to find a way to reel in...5, 6, 7 mil per year? Crazy.

The market disagrees. We haven't hit the bubble yet and as long as it keeps being all about the money, the best talent will demand the highest paychecks, and there will always be someone willing to pay just a little bit more.

Wisky May Lose More Than Coach

If Bo Pellini leaves for Tennesee, there may be a Big Red fandom clamoring to lure Barry Alvarez to return to his alma mater , Nebraska , to finiish his coaching in Lincoln . He remains a Favorite Son there.

According to Football Scoop, Tennessee has offered the job to Butch Jones. If true, not good for Bo.

Tennessee was 5-7 this year (1-7 in the SEC), Nebraska was 10-3. That would appeal to UT for a while...

Yeah, I think the Nebraska *ahem faithful are a bit delusional when it comes to their expectations of their coach. However, I think Pelini might have LESS job security at Tennessee than at Nebraska. I guess I just think it would be easier for him to continue winning 9-10 games a year at Nebraska than it would for him to get to 7-8-9 wins a year at Tennessee. If he doesn't get there quickly, I think that appreciation for Bo would quickly evaporate.

Butch Jones is headed to Tennessee, according to reports

The market becomes an unreliable rule when it relies on a single metric - wins on the field in this case - on which it makes its demand.

I now wonder if this is not one of the reservations ND has had to attaching its football program to a conference. The SEC would be attractive to them football-wise, the B1G is attractive academically, the ACC/Big East let them benefit without making a full on commitment to involving football. It seems as though they have found a way to have it all. Apparently they have not had to take hold their nose about any of it.

It seems as though they are in the best position in the market - the Warren Buffet of college football.
