The boys are back in town.

With classes resuming Tuesday morning after the holiday break, returning Golden Gopher football players met with their new coaching staff Monday night at the Gibson-Nagurski Complex. It was the first full team meeting with head coach Jerry Kill and his full staff since Kill took over the program in December.

I think it is sad when Gopherhole an GI are the only media that reports on this. There is absolutely nothing going on in the MN sports scene other than Gopher basketball and Kill establishing himself.

Twins are status quo.
Vikings are watching there top rivals compete to go to the super bowl.
Timberwolves have one guy that fills a stat sheet for a terrible squad.
Wild will likely miss playoffs and get a new coach.

Nobody was granted any access... I, for one, made attempts to talk w/ Kill, players, etc. Mainstream media was completely cut-off from doing anything with this meeting. I am not a big fan of just using verbatim stuff from gophersports.com. Always want my own stuff. For some reason, Kill is only doing Sid and Dave's Sunday morning show (the Mona influence) until Feb. 2. Won't fulfill any other media requests.
I was told Kill is willing to do a lot once signing day is over.

Hey Doogie, any idea why he won't talk to the rest of the media until after signing day?

That's his choice... the easy out = he's too busy recruiting... but he definitely could make time to do some stuff. The good thing: was told that he'll do a bunch post-Feb. 2. We'll have him on Sports Wrap, I want to sit down w/ him for 1500espn.com, we'll get him in-studio on 1500, etc.

I'm willing to bet it's due to an elaborate conspiracy concocted by the brain wizards at KFAN to keep Gopher football down.

I have no problem with his first official meeting with the players being closed to the media...and he is plenty busy until signing day. There will be lots of time after signing day to have access to him.

Don't you just love the quotes by Bennett in this article? If he isn't a captain this year, I don't know who will be one.

I hope Bennett has a great senior year. I hope we move him to WR though ;)

He's definitely not a super durable back to say the least. I think he will fill a variety of roles this year, but Eskeridge will most likely to get the nod unless one of the redshirted back steps up or we sign a kid ready to play (e.g. Sankey). I read somewhere that Devon Wright, if he's not an academic casualty, could move to reciever.

I think a guy like Bennett will be asked to be pretty versatile. I would expect to see him lined up in the backfield and occasionally in the slot.

Guys like Bennett are exactly what this program needs. He has had to go through quite a bit with two coaching changes, two injuries, being moved around from our starting HB to more of a third down role, he's played special teams and there hasn't been even a hint of him complaining. He's enthusiastic to be a Gopher.

Watching Bennett warm up without a shirt on before the Iowa game made me an even bigger fan. You could tell he was loving it. I hope he has a great senior season.

Would you rather him be honest and say, 'The media in this town is horrible for Gopher football'? I wouldn't 'make time' if I were him, given the history of the local media. His job is to make the people in his program better, not provide new material for Souhan and Reusse to twist around and rip apart.

Perhaps he's just not in the mood to try to entertain a bunch of different media entities while also trying to get his program in gear as fast as possible. He probably doesn't even wanna deal with Sid, but as a matter of courtesy, probably fulfills that one. Let him settle in, get his program in gear, that's all I'm worried about. He can be as silent as he wants haha.

I don't generally agree with you often.. but this post I agree with 135%. Personally I wouldn't give our local media two squirts of piss. Maybe only a very select few guys would I give any sort of time.

Strong Foundation

I believe Kill did the right thing about the handling of the media in this situation. Its about the players, and setting a strong foundation with the players. Who would want the media to screw it up for us? Kill is extremely busy right now working to get players in to the system as well as to recruit new players. There will be a time later for the media. Why does the media think they have to have their nose in everything anyway? Allow Kill to work during a critical time.

If and when you are able to make any of this happen can you give us a heads up on it all?

Yes... our goal is to have him on Sports Wrap the Sunday after signing day, so Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 6... will keep you posted on the other ideas.

Kill's a whole lot smarter than that. I doubt his plan is to go out of his way to antagonize the media. Part of his job is selling his program and, no matter what he might think of them, he needs the media to do that. Doesn't mean he doesn't know already who the jerks are, but he seems to take a very systematic approach and he's concentrating on higher priorities: recruiting, getting organized, meeting high school coaches, and training his players.

That's Easy To Answer

Hey Doogie, any idea why he won't talk to the rest of the media until after signing day?

Because most of the Twin Cities sports media types are narcissistic, self-promoting, negative chitheads! If I was Jerry Kill in the middle of my first recruiting class at Minnesota, I too would tell these guys to kiss my ass! He doesn't need them, all he needs to do is win, baby!

You want to hear Coach Kill? Tune into Sports Huddle on Sundays or go online and listen. What more do you guys need? A direct line?

True!

Absolutely! Winning cures a multitude of ills, especially crotchety old sports-writers! They won't have much to say if he's pictured in the Strib clutching a rose!

Fun to dream...

Go Gophers!

Or kissing the crystal football.

Yes, it is fun to dream..
