Blaise Andries

I cannot believe he didn’t get drafted…
The draft is weird that way. It is why mock drafts are completely worthless because it can go any one of a million different ways and all depends on what teams need in the later rounds. A little surprising the Kieft got drafted and Andries didn't but in the end both will have a shot in the NFL which is all that really matters.

Don't know if it's still true, but at one time, it was better to be an UDFA than a 7th round pick. Money was better, especially if multiple teams wanted to sign you.

Kiper and his ilk are the banes of sports TV and the internet.
No one checks the accuracy of their predictions at the end of the draft and questions why they will do the same thing next year.
They play on most humans' inability to tolerate uncertainty and prefer false predictions to no predictions.

Congrats to all the Gophers who will be in NFL camps...and kudos to the staff for developing a pipeline to the league. Four players drafted and countless others signed as free agents is a really nice thing for the program. Oh, and as far as Blaise not being drafted goes, Miami is a pretty nice place to spend a few months, so I'd say it worked out :)

Their accuracy gets checked every year, in multiple ways. Here's one example:

They routinely get 25 or more of the 1st round names correct. Not often the exact spot, but within a few picks up or down.

It's not an exact science but they're not just throwing darts, either.

If it's not for you, maybe don't read mock draft articles.

Also, I posit that many online forum/blogger draftnicks know less than some well-informed fans - this doesn't include me!

There is no criteria for being a draft guru now - at least back in the day before the internet and proliferation of outlets, you had to have some cred ala Mel and Todd to have your voice heard.

In summary - Gopher UDFA:

Blaise Andries - MIA
Micah Drew-Treadway - CHI
Sam Schlueter - SF
Jack Gibbens - TENN

Good luck to all!

Curious about this UDFA thing... where is the dividing line, where it becomes better to be an UDFA than being a very late round pick? I think I would rather be an UDFA than the last pick of the draft. Or am I missing something?

UDFA get to pick where they go. So you can choose a team in need of a linebacker as an example. Where a 6th or 7th round pick can't and the garenteed money can be higher for UDFA.

I think it depends on each player. A UDFA player ideally goes to a team that is a fit. Ideally, a player goes to a team that offers the best chance of making the team.

There are a lot of good players in this draft that were undrafted. I expect some of the UDFA players will challenge draftees or even starters. I would expect a lot of competition.

I don't think there is much difference between being a late round pick or an UDFA. UDFA do have the ability to see how the draft went and try to end up on a team that might have a greater need at their position.

In either case though, these are guys who are going to have to battle to make the team as there really isn't any incentive for the team to make sure a late round pick works out in the way they are motivated to make sure their early picks are a success.

Glad a bunch of our guys will get a chance to prove what they can do in NFL camps. Hopefully it works out for them and they end up on 2022 NFL rosters when it is all said and done.

lf you're drafted and signed, you are going to get a bigger paycheck and you're at an advantage in that the GM/Personnel Staff that drafted you doesn't want to be "wrong" so the chances of you sticking around for a while longer are enhanced. The other side of the coin is that a UDFA gets to pick his landing spot. Additionally, a lot of teams that didn't have a full slate of draft picks are probably going to work the UDFA list a little harder, so there's additional opportunity there. I think when it gets to the 7th round, a lot of guys would just as soon be a UDFA, but that's likely going to vary player-to-player.
