IMO -The next two recruiting classes are the biggest issue in the decision on Smith. This is a difficult one.
Extend him? That's crazy considering what is transpiring. The community won't buy it or the premium seats. We could be looking at 8000 attendance unless they catch fire.

Keep him and not extend him? Recruiting suicide.

I still maintain that there is enough talent here to have a decent amount of success here in the next couple years. I think Tubby could win with these guys and a few additions. I just don't see how he's going to recruit under the current cloud. If he wins next year- that would help- but I doubt it's enough to get Tyus - not sure on Vaughn or others.

Without the recruiting issue they could delay and pray for a turnaround next year with a nice returning nucleus and that would be nice for Tubby and certainly save the buyout. But can they wait and potentially blow two classes of recruits?

Recruiting is already on the down-slope. Extending Tubby will only make it worse.

Last two years with 0 ncaa appearances. Disinterested coach and players. Pathetic product on the court. 2-11 in last 13 games at the Barn. Numerous transfers. Questionable offense. Questionable playing time and substitutions. Blaming players in public. Lack of player improvement. Home court fans-base becoming smaller and dull.

I don't think we should worry about our recruiting going on the decline because of no extension.

You hit the nail on the head with this one. Tubby has to go.

I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt on the incoming class. I like what I hear about Ellenson, sounds like a tough player ala Coleman so that's good. Buggs is interesting despite his "Where's Waldo" type bio- kid is obviously a great athlete and has a jump shot - so some nice raw materials there.

Vaughn has said absolutely nothing to make anyone think that he is going to consider Minnesota. He has publicly said he has a great relationship with the Baylor coaches and pondered committing early. Even if he doesn't end up at Baylor, I can't really see Vaughn committing to Minnesota.

I think we have a better chance at landing Tyus than Rashad. Tyus HAS said home is important to him and that home is where everything comes from. Now if Minnesota is home or not to him is the question. He may have just been referring to his family, which reportedly he has a great relationship with. Also, apparently his brother apparently really like the gophers. The reason I think we may not (more like probably) not get Tyus is because he reportedly already has a good relationship with Izzo and Coach K. I think he has also said he likes their style of play and that they have produced many NBA point guards.

More important than getting Tyus or Rashad is just not getting Spring recruits.

Rashad wearing Gopher gear to high profile games should count for something in this "what if" scenario.

Bga1 posted last week that Tubby's our guy for better or for worse next year & I agree with him. I say don't extend him & let him coach for his supper next year. If we end up top-half of the B1G, make the tourney, win a game & retain the core players then Tubby's set for a big pay day. If we crap the bed, then we don't renew & we find a new coach. Don't extend a meaningless 2 years. Recruits aren't fooled by that type of "security" so why pretend? At the end of the day we can post all the polls we want but the only thing the posters have a choice in next year is...

A) I will you support the team next year regardless of how I feel about the coach.
B) I will root against the team so we can get rid of Tubby.

I think they should fire him. Yes finding a coach who is willing to come into a predicament such as this would be difficult. However, I like the young talent we have now, I just think Tubby has lost the team and has horrible in game coaching. If we get a new coach who can inject some energy and passion along with some decent coaching into this team I think we could have a pretty decent year next year and the excitement will return. If Tubby is here and we have a similar season we will still have the black eyes from the previous years and things won't seem as bright as they would with a new coach. Time to start fresh.

CRG- He is our guy, that's what I said, although I have to say the whole experience Sunday weakened my conviction a bit. I just believe that Tubby has to have a big change in his staff to continue. There are games left so let's see what happens but this is not good. I have to ask you- with no extension (I agree with you- they can't extend at this point) he will have to attempt to go out and sign another class of recruits before another meaningful game is played next fall. That's at least three schollys and that worries me. How do you see next fall's recruiting class?

The only Solomonic solution I see is if Flip were willing to assist Tubby as the coach in waiting. It's probably a silly idea but it's the only
way I can see us remaining viable in recruiting while not extending Tubby yet at the same time allowing Tubby a chance that he deserves.... to go out as a winner. Maybe just a new assistant staff (no Flip) would do it- I don't know. Something has to change or we will have serious issues in the offseason. (ticket renewal issues for sure, player departures maybe)
My choice is I am always buying season tickets and always supporting the team and attending every game regardless of who the coach. I don't know of anybody who thinks option B is a good one.

I don't believe Tubby's arrogance will allow for a bench shakeup.

You may think that Tubby should be fired, but he's not going to get the boot this year. We could lose by double digits for the rest of the year and he wouldn't get fired.

There is no way Jones is coming here....as long as the current coach is here! Jones and other players like him are all thinking about playing in the NBA some day. We haven't had a player drafted in what 9 years.

And btw....after watching that slop on Sunday - if Matt Thomas comes here he's an idiot!

Gopher gear? Seriously? He was wearing Baylor gear at his last game. It means absolutely nothing.

I kind of agree. I don't think it means NOTHING (he could have come in a Yankees hat, that'd been worse) but Matt Thomas had gopher gear on too, and while I'd LOVE to have Thomas, I doubt he comes here. But if he does, maybe we can start to read into their clothing choices lol

So you're even blaming Tubby for us not having good enough players to get drafted by the NBA even before he was our coach? There are plenty of things to rip on Tubby for, but this one is not it. Mbakwe would have been drafted if he didn't get hurt.

Not sure "recruiting suicide" matters much. There will be a lot of roster turnover if there is a coaching change and coaches have a way of "suggesting" a change of scenery to kids they don't want on their roster. I think most would agree that Tubby's recruiting has went downhill since his first two classes (there's certainly a debate to be had over how far it has fallen) and I doubt we will see elite talent brought in during the 2013 class regardless of whether or not he's extended due to the past 2 years record, style of place, substitution patterns, and lack of facilities, etc.

The worst thing possible for this program is a 3rd straight horrible season in 2012-2013 and Tubby's buyout (due to extension) making it impossible to go in a new direction. I am ok with a Brewster extension, but in no way do I want to see a 7th year of Tubby Smith if year 6 doesn't produce a .500 or better Big Ten record.

We need a good recruiting class next fall. Badly. That's why he needs a new assistant coaching staff if he stays. Gotta add some spark.
