The Big Ten West seems to be maligned for not having a historical super-power team, but the depth!

The West is the only division in college football with 4 teams with at least 9 wins, regardless of the outcome of any remaining bowl games. Most full conferences don't have that many.

ACC Atlantic - 3 teams
ACC Coastal - 1
Big 12 (entire) - 3
Big Ten East - 3
Big Ten West - 4
Pac 12 North - 1
Pac 12 South - 1
SEC East - 2
SEC West - 2 (possible 3 if Arkansas wins)

AAC - 3 (entire league)
C-USA - 3 (entire league)
MAC - 1 (2 if CMU upsets Wazzu today)
MWC - 4 (entire league)
Sun Belt - 3 (entire league)

If Arkansas loses to Penn State the West will have as many or more 9+ win teams than any entire conference.

It is interesting that the "SEC! SEC! SEC!" chanters wring some of their identity from the teams at the top of their top-heavy conference. Kind of lame.

If you take out the top of our conference and the top of theirs we produce less draft picks and generally have less talented players.

It’s super lame. That conference has been top heavy for a long time. They all fall down and touch themselves over sec football but it’s really become 2-3 teams at the top and not a deep conference like it was a long time ago.
 


Two SEC schools will vie for the national title and bragging rights for their conference.
 



What sucks is that without a real playoff we will never get a true champion. What you will get is what talent and coaching staff can most benefit from a month off to prepare for 1 game and play in a southern city. With a 12 team, three week playoff that will start in mid-December, you will get a truer sense of the champion.

SEC with inflated coaching staffs, top end talent and playing in their own back yard does have all the advantages.

B1G Ten West will get a chance to get represented in a 12 team playoff and I imagine will make some noise than.

Yeah. I think people miss this.

If Alabama played Cincinnati a week after the SEC title game it would be a lot different.

coaching staffs are good enough to not really be fooled at all with a month to prepare.

no bye weeks would lead to more upsets IMO.
 

Chances are that if it was a two team playoff Georgia would have been chosen over Michigan.
Watching the season it was evident that 8-12 teams could have completed this year for the title.

Baylor, OK State, and Utah were really good teams.

I plain don’t understand why anyone touts a 12 team playoff, that is promoted by the traditional top teams because it gives the subjectively ranked top 4 teams a first round bye.

Having a playoff bye in college is a huge advantage that gives four teams extra time to prepare and heal. The lower ranked teams will almost always have less depth with an injury having a greater negative impact on the teams chance to win.

A 12 team playoff will almost certainly add a week to the season, where an 8 team playoff will fit nicely into in the current time frame.

I’m all for an 8 team playoff that includes P5 conference champs. However if you want 12 teams, just go to 16, as it removes the bye and gives more teams a chance to be in the playoffs.

Yeah. This year there is a large difference between 1 and 3 I think. And I think we all saw Georgia was a step above. Historically good defense.
I thought Bama was in the second tier until they killed Georgia.
In terms of the rest…the difference between Michigan and #14 isn’t huge.

The problem with 4 or 8 is it subjective cuts out 4 or 8 of the 12


honestly the solution to all the “playoff” debates is to remove the committee and have an objective formula and criteria for rankings. Then the debate can actually occur of size. The real problem isn’t size, it is subjectivity being prioritized over objectivity.

to me, the best solution is a 16 team playoff with 10 auto bids for conference champs (yes all 10). A mathematical formula sets up seeding. First two rounds at home stadiums. Do whatever you want for the last two rounds. This is the ONLY way you could accommodate the extremely unrealistic possibility of 10 unbeaten teams. But it means even in the worst case scenario any potential deserving team is included. And if an undeserving team gets in…who cares…they’ll get their ass kicked

start the season the Saturday before Labor Day instead of Labor Day weekend.

Yes, if you go to 16, there is room for the G5 schools. However, I think the G5 should have their own playoff. The P5 has so many advantages over G5 (money, name recognition, money, recruiting prowess, and more money) that the G5 can’t normally compete with the top P5 schools.

But if the G5 wanted their own playoff, you’d think they would have one by now. They seem to like the Bowl Games.

The G5 specifically chose to be FBS not FCS

if they wanted their own playoff they’d play FCS.

Maybe you think there should be a split into 4 levels of ncaa football instead of 3 but that’s kind of separate discussion to the playoff expansion discussion

I do not disagree. I think 16 teams is the better route with the first round games being played on the home fields of the top seed. From there we get rid of the bowl system and play the games at naitonal locations.

It’s a little more complicated than they chose to be FBS instead of FCS and they’ve basically been FBS since the 70’s. The G5 are full Div 1-A football schools with at least 16 scholarship sports, 85 football scholarships and average attendance of at least 15,000. FCS has lower requirements in all these categories.

I don’t think the G5 wants to move down a level to FCS. There has been some talk of going it alone with a playoff, but most of it has been getting into an expanded FBS playoff, which benefits them more. Yes, they do have a choice, but unless the P5 leaves them hanging, I think they stay in whatever the current system becomes.
 

After this bowl season, it's apparent that for the B10 West to be relevant on the national stage, they need to upgrade their QB play. We have all the pieces except for dominant passing attacks.
