Leib said the regents explored the possibility of the Big Ten taking Cal and adding additional Pac-12 schools -- Stanford, Washington and Oregon.

"We certainly put some pressure on to see if we could,'' he said. "In the end, the expansion was not going to be on the table for us.’’

Just my opinion... because the Big Ten isn't interested in expanding until they get Notre Dame to commit.

I am not a ND fan, but went to a game a few years ago and will gladly go again. Pretty cool atmosphere to watch a game. You can feel history.
 

So what’s everyone’s opinion on 9pm starts? Not a fan myself but likely to happen on west coast games unless the Big10 specifically rules out evening games on the west coast.

What's the infatuation with Oregon?

They have no TV market (Bay Area is #6, Seattle is #14), and once St. Phil is gone, they have no Sugar Daddy to make them a national brand.

Maybe. Portland is top 25 and Oregon has a brand and NIKE. I would think Standford or Cal.

It felt old, but not outdated. Very simple inside the stadium. The whole trip was really cool - they were playing Navy which brought another whole side of it. My first time seeing a service academy in person.

The ND band greeted Navy at the stadium. The basketball arena was open on game day and they had a 'legend meet and greet' - I assume they do this every game, the game I was at was Reggie Brooks and some other play from the late 80s/early 90s. We did the trumpets under the dome, the prayer grotto, etc. All just 'cool' stuff.

That’s a bingo!

ND only school named specifically in the new Big Ten TV deal as far as putting on paper what their addition is worth.

ND’s TV deal with NBC goes through 2025, I believe. So maybe in tel he next year or two we’ll see what they’re looking at for re-upping.

Of course, Big Ten now has NBC in the fold. So that could be an “easier” transition.

Likely because without Notre Dame or some other large college market (Georgia tech, North Carolina, Virginia, Florida state) it doesn’t increase the pie pieces very much

I don't think so. It's all about markets and Denver makes more sense than Eugene.
 


is it the geo area or the viewers? Stanford and Oregon bring in about 1.4M viewers. Cal about 700k (Gophers about 800k). Colorado brings in about 600K

it its viewers, ND 3.6m. Another name mentioned by some: FSU 2.2m

Lot of Nebraska fans already in Denver metro. Not sure how BTN and/or FOX, CBS, NBC would view adding that. But I don't know

Pretty old news IMO. If the B1G was interested in any of those schools they would already be confirmed future members like UCLA and USC.

But since when does the California Board of Regents get to tell the B1G - or any conference for that matter - what schools they should add?

it seems awfully presumptuous that the BOR thinks it has that kind of clout.

They can't, of course. But it didn't hurt to try.

You're oversimplifying the situation, I think.

Of course, no university system can command any conference to do anything. But the idea was that the UCR would block UCLA from joining the Big Ten unless Cal was also extended an invite. To make that work, the four additional schools were discussed.

Big Ten likely consulted with their TV partners, and the TV partners said they would not pay pro rata increases in the contract that was negotiated with just USC & UCLA joining, for the four additional schools, and that was that. Big Ten held firm. UCR caved in

It's timing. Right now it wants to get those two teams integrated. I have no doubt Warren is looking at more teames from Pac-12, just not in the immediate future.

Where are you getting those viewer numbers?
 

How does admitting ND increase the number of TVs that have the BTN on them?
It may increase the number of viewers who already have the BTN which would make the TV providers happy but would not necessarily increase the TV revenue to the BIG.
The BIG is ready in the LA market, Cal might add San Fan and WA the Seattle market but Oregon would add little.
