BIG TEN MEDAL OF HONOR 100TH ANNIVERSARY SPOTLIGHT – Wisconsin’s Douglas R. McFadyen: McFadyen, who earned the Big Ten Medal of Honor in 1970, captained Wisconsin to its first-ever NCAA Tournament berth at the conclusion of the 1969-70 season. The Calgary, Alberta, native skated in 98 games for the Badgers, tallying 82 points on 15 goals and 67 assists from the blue line. A three-time letterwinner, McFadyen led the team’s defensemen in points in 1967-68 (35 points) and 1969-70 (16 points).

Where We Rank: Minnesota remains the unanimous choice as the No. 1 team for the second straight week in the latest editions of the USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls, released on Monday. The Gophers, who were idle this past weekend, were joined at the top by Michigan, which climbed to No. 2 in both polls following a weekend sweep of Michigan Tech …

Hot Start: Unbeaten through six games, Minnesota is off to its best start in five seasons. The 2008-09 squad opened the season with an 11-game unbeaten streak (7-0-4) and did not lose a game until Nov. 22. Minnesota will look to build on its current streak this weekend when the Gophers visit No. 4/3 Notre Dame. Minnesota is one of only two remaining undefeated teams in the nation …

Dominant Defenses: Both Minnesota and Michigan find themselves at the top of the national rankings as a result of their strong defensive play. The Gophers are second nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 1.67 goals per game, while the Wolverines are tied for third in the nation with 1.75 goals against per game and have held opponents to two goals or less in seven of eight games …

Gone Streaking: With three points over the weekend against Lake Superior State, Wisconsin forward Nic Kerdiles extended his current point streak to 18 games. The sophomore is now just three games shy of the longest point streak in school history, held by current head coach Mike Eaves at 21 games. Kerdiles has recorded 27 points (10 goals, 17 assists) during the streak …

Lighting the Lamp: The opening weeks of the season have included plenty of scoring for conference schools. Minnesota leads the nation with 4.83 goals per game, followed by Wisconsin (eighth with 3.83 goals per game), Ohio State (tied for 13th, 3.38), Penn State (tied for 25th, 2.83), Michigan (tied for 28th, 2.75) and Michigan State (tied for 32nd, 2.67) …

Winning Ways: Ohio State has now won four of its last five games, including a win over then-No. 20/rv Minnesota Duluth last Saturday. The two keys have been solid goaltending and an increase in scoring. Freshman goalie Matt Tomkins has started all five games during that stretch, posting a save percentage of .918 and a 2.43 goals-against average. The Buckeyes have scored at least four goals in each of their four wins this season …

Taking on the Best: With two more wins over ranked opponents last weekend, Big Ten teams have now posted eight such victories this season. Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State and Wisconsin have combined to defeat Boston College (twice), Boston University (twice), Lake Superior State (once), Minnesota Duluth (once) and New Hampshire (twice) …
