Big Ten discussing start of college football season on week of Thanksgiving

I like the idea. Let the 2/3 Power five teams take the risk. If they are able to pull it off...More power to them.

Thanksgiving at least means students are off campus. That is a plus.

Late Oct has very little benefit over just starting in Sept as originally planned, IMO.

I just wonder if you can actually backup your opinion with any reasons? Or just sticking with that “let them play and whatever happens happens” line? That won’t fly with the presidents l, IMO.

Hard to know what the numbers will be in October. If they are way down and teams can test 3X per week like the ACC, you could make a case its safe enough to play.

I’m not sure what your point about the ACC testing is? There’s nothing an ACC school can think of that a Big Ten school can’t replicate.

Another reason waiting a while, to see what works and what goes wrong, makes sense to me.

5 months ... what?

What would you do over those 5 months that would make this better?

Have a real plan with multiple options in place.

Teams began fall camp, they released the revised schedule and said they were moving forward with the season, then cancelled it a few days later. Nothing changed with the virus in those few days.

Blah, blah, blah. Fake outrage. Fake conjuring up that some moral sin was performed.

Who are you putting on a show for?? Yourself, clearly.

I'm not really sure that is different than now... everything is up in the air.

It's up in the air for ACC and SEC too, other teams are already pushing games back due to quarantines.

I think three tests a week will help stop an outbreak on a team before it gets too far.

I think that's very possible, but the quarantine rules that some schools have put out means everyone exposed to the person who tests positive gets quarantined.

Unless they change that I'm not 100% sure the number of players impacted changes much.

I'm curious how bowl games might fit into the schedule. Would they lobby the bowl committees to allow B1G teams to play despite not having the six win requirement and play as a "mid-season break" then pick up in January for a second half, or skip bowls all together? Or are bowls already canceling?

I wonder if bowl games happen.

If bowl games happen with no fans.... that's hella costly to the teams, it already can be costly, but that's even MORE costly. The bowl games are financed on the backs of the teams selling tickets usually... if they aren't responsible for those costs ... who pays?

I wouldn't think bowls would have much reason to take place (except maybe a few major ones) without traveling fans and fans in attendance. It seems - as of now - we are still a long ways off from having enough fans being able to attend to make it worthwhile for the bowls to put on the whole event. Just my $0.02

Well the Redbox Bowl is cancelled. I'm pretty bummed about that. :(

I think that is because the Big Ten wanted a new bowl in Vegas at the Raiders stadium with the PAC.

Here is one guy very knowledgeable about college football writing that the BIG will not play football until fall 2021.

back to the B1G:

Based on what I'm hearing/reading, the "Thanksgiving" angle is being pushed by the Coaches. And, as we know, the Coaches do not make the decision on whether to play.

So, the real question is whether enough of the Presidents are having second thoughts that they would be willing to go on the record as changing their minds and agreeing to play this Fall/Winter.

Since the Presidents made their decision, nothing has really changed on the covid front. In fact, several Midwestern states are seeing their case counts increase. And there have been significant outbreaks on several college campuses.

So, barring some really significant medical news, I don't see the Presidents being willing to admit publicly that they jumped the gun. The Coaches can make all the noise they want - but in the end, the liability - and the decision-making power - rests with the Administrators, not the coaches.

Warren should have had a couple proplay schools do a presentation to support their position. A couple antiplay schools support their position. They could bring in experts or whoever to support their position.

Then, once as much information as possible is presented, tell the schools that the country and other football conferences are divided on this issues. Therefore each school will be allowed to decide if they want to play or not play.

I dont see why this wouldnt have been the best path. Everyone would have been happy. Proplay schools would have been able to play immediately and antiplay schools could have played in the winter, spring, or not at all.
Everyone would have been happy.

At any rate, that ship has sailed so hopefully at this point they can play as soon as possible.

Yes. Its also tough to stick by an unpopular/difficult decision when, in theory, the decision could still be reversed and the course of action changed. I think ultimately, no football will be played in the B1G until September 2021.

Nice points by both SON and Block M. I am sure everyone has had different experiences since March depending on their location, lifestyle, and friend circle but it seems crazy to me to be spending too much time figuring out how college kids can play football when there are real issues finding ways for kids of all ages to attend school safely. I would like to think the Presidents have the best interests of the kids at heart when they want to cancel/delay football and I would hope that coaches and AD's have the best interests of the kids at heart when they want them to play. Unfortunately I view it more as the Presidents are more concerned with backlash/lawsuits if something goes wrong and coaches/AD's are more concerned with salaries, budgets, and recruiting if there are not games.

The Big Ten leaders watched Hamilton together and were inspired by Aaron Burr.
