Big Ten Championship Game looking for seat-fillers

If true, The Big 10 will have to realize that Chicago is the place to hold this. Alumni, hotels central location, location, location. The Hub of the Midwest. Delaney chose Indianapolis and he should have to live with it.
Wasn't Indianapolis chosen because that is where they have the B1G basketball tourny? That gets pretty good turnout I think.

Basketball is played in an arena of about 18,000, and they cann't fill it for most games. They chose Indiana because its "the hotbed of basketball" Again you play it in Chicago and the walk up traffic alone is a sell out.

Indianapolis has the worst downtown of any major city I've been to and a rather weak college football culture.

Chicago would be ideal, but the Chicago Park District needs to get their act together regarding the condition of the turf at Soldier Field before the Big Ten gives it a December football game. Atlanta is the capital of the SEC as Chicago is the capital of the Big Ten, so it would definitely be a sellout every year.

Green Bay would be a cool novelty every once in a while as well.

Also, the stadium in Indianapolis is indoor, probably a big part in the choice for a December college game.

How could Wisconsin not fill up the stadium? They have the most fervent fanbase and are the most rabid travelers in the nation! Surely they could take a weekend's leave of absence from excessive inebriation, flopping around on top of their sister-wives, killing massive quantities of people, and screwing deed dear to make the 6-hour drive to Indianapolis?

This is what potentially happens when you get the 5th best program in a conference playing against a team that is probably 7-9 range for a championship.

So there are so few college football fans in Indianapolis that they have to pay people to go to the game? Why wouldn't they just give the tickets away for free? It just doesn't add up or make sense to me.

Conference championships should rotate between cities. When it's in the same city year after year, it's not as big of a deal to the people in that city. If a tourney only comes to your city once every three or four years, it's a much bigger deal so more fans would go. In basketball, there is no reason why it can't rotate between Indy, Chicago, Detroit, and maybe even Minneapolis.

I think the problem is that Chicago's out because they are bound and determined to keep it indoors. I'd like to see it rotate between major cities around the conference, including Chicago, Green Bay, Cleveland, etc. There would be less problems with selling tickets if the game is more of a novelty in each city every 5 or 6 years.

The conference already tweeted that they aren't paying anyone to go to the game.

Maybe this is true for the B1G. We'll see. It certainly isn't a problem for the SEC.

Green Bay would be a horrible destination for the game in every aspect beyond the stadium.

Probably, but as a novelty, it would be fine once a decade. Cleveland and Detroit aren't exactly my favorite cities to visit either. If you're just looking for a destination, it's Chicago hands-down. But they seem intent on playing the game in a bubble.

I think dpodoll68 summed up the state of Wisconsin pretty well.

I think Wisconsin fans are overconfident and would rather spend their money on the Rose Bowl.
I agree that fans with limited $$$ are holding out for the Rose Bowl.

What if the team with the better record got to host the game? Obvouisly the B1G is hoping this becomes a huge event, so wants the control of a planned site. But if people aren't buying tickets, maybe a school hosting is a better route.

Would love to have this game outdoors at Soldier Field...we are the B1G for goodness sakes...we play football in the cold and are proud of it...screw Indianapolis....that place suks!

5th? 7th to 9th? = you clueless
How so? Even if you live under the premise that college football started in 1993, it's not crazy to put Wisconsin as the 5th best program. http://www.cleveland.com/datacentral/index.ssf/2008/10/alltime_big_ten_standings_and.html
Look at the bottom grid. That basically discounts everything prior to the Big Ten adding PSU in 1993. Factor in that PSU, OSU and Michigan are all traditional powerhouses in college football with multiple national titles and it's very reasonable to rank those programs ahead of Wisconsin. Of course, that grid doesn't include Nebraska, but with 3 national titles after college football began in 1993, I'm going to go ahead and rank them ahead of Wisconsin as well.
As far as MSU is concerned, you can rank them anywhere from 6-10, so I'm having trouble seeing why Rosemountain is clueless.
