Golden Gophers Announce 2011-12 Big Ten Basketball Schedule

The University of Minnesota men's basketball program, in conjunction with the Big Ten Conference, announced its 2011-12 conference schedule today. The schedule will include 18 conference games, all of which will be broadcast live on national television.

“I think we have put together a formidable non-conference schedule to go with an always tough Big Ten Conference schedule,” said head coach Tubby Smith. “The Big Ten will again be one of the top conferences, top to bottom, in the country so we know that every night is going to be a battle.”

The Gophers' conference opener against Illinois in Champaign will air on Dec. 27 at 6:30 p.m. on the BTN. In all, the Maroon and Gold will appear 15 times on the BTN during the conference season, including Minnesota’s lone matchups against Michigan (Jan. 1 in Ann Arbor), Purdue (Jan. 8 at Williams Arena) and Penn State (Jan. 15 in State College).

Minnesota will play host to Ohio State, the Gophers’ other “single-play” opponent, on Feb. 14 at Williams Arena. The game is scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN, one of three games that may appear on the ESPN family of networks. The Minnesota/Indiana game at “The Barn” is designated as a CBS Wildcard game. The matchup will take place on either Feb. 25 or 26. The date and broadcast will be determined no later than Feb. 10.

The Gophers and the University of Nebraska will play a pair of games during the Huskers’ inaugural Big Ten Conference campaign. Minnesota travels to Lincoln on Feb. 1 and will host on March 3 in the conference finale for both teams. The Gophers hold a 46-13 all-time record against Nebraska.

Minnesota will open the non-conference season with four-straight games at Williams Arena, beginning with a matchup against Bucknell on Fri., Nov. 11. Minnesota will also play host to either North Dakota or South Dakota State (Nov. 14), Fairfield (Nov. 17) and Mount St. Mary’s (Nov. 21) prior to its only road trip of the non-conference slate as part of the Old Spice Classic in Orlando, Fla.

Both Bucknell and Fairfield reached the post-season in 2010-11. The Bison finished 25-9 and lost to eventual NCAA Champion Connecticut in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Stags went 25-9, the most wins in school history, and lost in the second round of the NIT.

Minnesota's will play three games in Orlando as part of the aforementioned ESPN OId Spice Classic over the Thanksgiving Holiday. The Gophers open the classic on Nov. 24 1:30 p.m. Central against DePaul on ESPN2. Minnesota will play either Texas Tech or Indiana State in the second round on Nov. 25. The third and final round of the tournament will be played on Nov. 27.

The remaining field includes Fairfield, Dayton, Wake Forest and Arizona State. All games as part of the classic will be broadcast on the ESPN family of networks (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU & ESPN3.com).

The Gophers defeated Western Kentucky, No. 8 North Carolina and West Virginia to win the 2010 Puerto Rico Classic. Minnesota has an all-time record of 70-40 in in-season tournaments, dating back to the Chicago District Olympic Tournament during the 1935-36 season. The Gophers will head to Orlando with a 9-3 record during the Tubby Smith era in in-season tournaments.

Minnesota returns from Florida for a game on Nov. 30 against Virginia Tech. The contest, the first meeting in the history of the programs, will be part of the 13th annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The Gophers hold a 4-8 record in the Challenge, losing to Virginia last season.

The Gophers will open the month of December with a contest against PAC 12 Conference member Southern California on Dec. 3. The matchup will be the fifth meeting between the schools but the first since a 76-58 Minnesota victory in the 1993 NIT.

Minnesota’s non-conference schedule will also include Appalachian State (Dec. 6), St. Peters (Dec. 10), Central Michigan (Dec. 13) and North Dakota State or South Dakota State (Dec. 22). St. Peter’s finished last season with a 20-14 record, losing to Purdue in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Maroon and Gold's season officially begins on Tues., Nov. 1, in an exhibition slate against Bemidji State. Minnesota's other exhibition game will be Mon., Nov. 7 vs. Augustana College. Both exhibition contests will be held at Williams Arena.

What's with all the NC games on BTN.com? Ugh.

A couple of things that stood out to me:

1. Open with 7 of the first 11 BT games on the road. Finish with 5 of the final 7 at home. Always tough to win on the road so hopefully this team can weather the first 11 games and not come completely unglued as a team like last year when they hit a bump in the road.

2. Too many games scheduled for Sunday's. To me college sports is a Saturday sport on weekends, not a Sunday sport. If the Indiana game at the end of the year flexes to a Sunday, they'll have played 6 BT games on Sundays. Personal preference but Yuck...

3. We miss playing at OSU and at Purdue while Michigan and Penn St don't come to Williams Arena. Not sure how I free about it. One one had, that's probably 3 teams that will finish in the top half of the conference standings so that makes our chances of finishing high in the standings that much greater. However, RPI matters so there's that. I will say the home slate is pretty nice in terms of quality basketball.

Gopher Men's Basketball Season Tickets are on sale now. Tickets for the 2011-12 season are available by calling 612.624.8080 or 1.800.UGOPHER or online at www.gophersports.com or www.mygophersports.com.

I've experienced this before and it's a bit frustrating: Minnesota will issue a release that says tickets are on sale, but they really are not. Reading this release, you'd think that season tickets were on sale and available on their websites. However, if you head over to www.mygophersports.com right now, you'll see "Season tickets ticket information will be available in late Spring 2011. Please check back for more information!", "The Men's Basketball schedule will be available in Summer 2011. Please check back for more information!" and other outdated information.

Perhaps interested folks will just have to call them when they are open next. Would be nice if there was a little coordination on this type of thing, though.

OSU should jump out to a great start

Good observations, Pewter.

Looking at it from a conference standpoint, the first thing that caught my eye was the "good start" they're basically guaranteeing Ohio State. Look at the Buckeyes' first 8 games:

NW
@ IU
NEB
@ Iowa
@ Ill
IU
@ Neb
PSU

No Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue or Wisconsin (generally expected to be in the top 5) until the 9th game. Of course, on the flip side, the second half of their schedule heats up big time.
