It looks like the BIG Tailgate show will be on campus tomorrow. I have no idea where they will be, or if it's a fan friendly event in the same way that gameday is....but just sharing that they mention this in their show today. Roughly the 24 min mark.

Ski U Mah!

I def got musician vibes on that photo too. Bro plays a gritty sax!

That's what I was thinking. Sixties/seventies era, soul and R&B — a first-call session man on tenor or alto sax.

It's probably the very cool shirt, the bone white jacket and the shades.

Plus, I remember Winfield as being a very, very cool guy.

A question for some of my fellow seniors:

Was Winfield drafted by MLB, the NBA and the NFL?

I know he never played college football, but I seem to remember some NFL team (Vikings, maybe?) taking a late-round flyer on him because of his size and athleticism.

EDIT: Yes, he was.

Drafted in three sports by 4 different teams...

"Dave Winfield was the first athlete in history to be drafted by four different leagues, but in the end he chose Major League Baseball over the NFL, the ABA and the NBA – and found a home in the National Pastime."

I believe that is true

Yep.

And the ABA.

And the ABA.

Yes, you're right! He was drafted by the ABA as well. At Minnesota, he played outfield and pitched for the baseball team, as I recall. Ahead of his time. Our own version of Shohei Ohtani, back in the 70s.

Wow. A kid who grew up in St. Paul and was a (truly) Golden Gopher.

Man - as a kid I thought Dave Winfield was the coolest!! Back when I could tolerate the Twins and still had dreams in my heart. This was right around when "little big league" came out....lol!
I met Dave at spring training in 1993 at an exclusive event I was fortunate enough to win tickets to. I was 11 and just another kid with a baseball and a Sharpie. I met Kirby Puckett and bunch of other guys, too. Dave was the only one to take time to talk to me and make ME feel important. He just spoke with me and asked about my life. He was soooo cool. I'll never forget that and I'll tell anyone I can how great it was to meet Dave Winfield.

One helluva college pitcher...and the unfortunate victim of the greatest collapse in College World Series history.

Google USC MN 1973 college world series, and have a barf bag handy.

In the late 70s I played for Bill Peterson’s Attucks Brooks American Legion team. Winfield played for Peterson a few years earlier. Winfield’s first year in the bigs he didn’t make the All Star game so he came to our practice site, Oxford playground, to take batting practice with us. Holy cow was that cool!! He talked to us as a group and individually. Lots of tips and encouragement. His brother Steve was with him and he was a super athlete too. On that team that year was Paul Molitor, Jerry Boland, Bob Blake, Joe Lentsch, all who played Gopher baseball. Winny is a true legend. It was amazing that day to have both Molly and Winny on the same Oxford playground ball field!

That's one of the coolest stories. I'm jealous. It's something nobody can take away. So cool.

Wheeler or Kessel would be good.
Wasn’t sure if kessel would be ok or not because he is a Wisconsin guy and was a one and done. Damn good player though. And the fastest chubby guy to ever play in the nhl, I was at a fishing resort just into Canada by baudette and they had a signed Dave snuggerud pic at the resort along with a bunch of others that had stayed there. Everyone liked snuggy

Kessel was a nice steal right out of Madison and awesome when he trolled the crowd there. Amanda Kessel also a Gopher hockey GOAT.

Snuggerud's kid will play for the Gophers next year and should be a star.

But anyway back on topic...glad to see Dave Winfield in town for the game. A Gopher great.

Posted this in the game thread too, but….really?:

Brock Vereen shows up to host Big10 Tailgate, on the campus of his alma mater wearing a f*#^ing green shirt?
