Big 12 done?

At the end of the day I think that Texas and Nebraska actually would like to stay in the Big 12 and some of these talks with other conferences have been about leverage and playing a game of poker with one another. I think Nebraska was hoping to use the rumors of a Big 10 offer to get some concessions from Texas and in turned Texas has been floating this PAC-10 offer to force Nebraska's hand. If Nebraska truly has a Big 10 offer in place they have nothing to worry about, but if not then Texas is trying to scare them into thinking they might be left out in the cold. It is in Texas' best interest to keep the Big 12 together because of the potential revenue for them. Some of the estimates I have seen from Texas writers is that the Texas only network could make them up to 30 million a year. The Pac-10 or Big ten will in no way allow them to have their own network as the Big 12 conference leadership will allow them. I do think that Mizzou will leave at the first oportunity, but they are viewed largely as replaceable by the Big 12. Texas I think right now is just protecting themselves in case other teams leave and the league collapses, but would rather keep their current sweet setup if possible.

If Notre Dame joins the Big Ten, it doesn't set off a chain of dominoes. Not that that is going to impact Notre Dame's decision. But if some other schools are added, things will get really disrupted. If the new team(s) come from the Big 12, this could be good news for some of the better non-BCS teams, as they would have a great chance of joining BCS conferences. While I favor an 8-team playoff, getting the better non-BCS teams into BCS conferences would strengthen the BCS by removing much of BCS controversies.

If it comes from the Big East, that could also really shake things up. The Big East could be so weakened that they could lose their status as a BCS conference. This would leave teams scrambling to get out of there as fast as possible.

So, Notre Dame joining the Big Ten keeps things stable, but if it's someone else, sit down and get a bowl of popcorn, it's going to be great to watch.

How about if the big 12 south goes PAC 10 (less Baylor plus Colorado) and just ND joins the big 10. Finally revenge for 84-13 as Nebraska has to join the WAC.

Funny take on all these Pac10 rumors

even if it was written by a SCum grad. The one thing I struggle with on all these Longhorn rumors is that TX has a lot more in common with AZ than it does with MN or IA. One scenario is the Pac10 sets up one division with the two AZ schools + the 6 add'ns from the B12, then all the west coast schools make up the other division. You could pretty much pencil in UCLA vs UT in the title game every year.

With who though? No one they can add really replaces the TV markets Mizzou delivers. Not saying losing Mizzou breaks up the Big XII ('cause I'm sure it wouldn't) so I think they're replaceable in that way. But I'm not sure I see how they are "largely replaceable" from a TV perspective.

No Texas school helps them, Utah or BYU could be ok since Salt Lake City is a decent market. But that's about it and it would still be a step down DMA wise.

UCLA?

"Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe all but killed his own conference"

Check out the article by Dan Wetzel of Yahoo! Sports

Granted it is an opinion piece, but Wetzel writes a devastating article on how Big 12 commish Dan Beebe is essentially out of his league and how his naivete is letting their conference go down the drain. Wetzel protrays Big 10 commish Jim Delaney as the real kingpin in college sports "it’s not Delany’s fault he’s smarter than the other guys."

Good read

As above, UCLA? What? In addition, if Oklahoma is one of the other 6 as rumored, they'd have something to say about UT's automatic spot.

I think he may be giving Delaney entirely too much credit. I don't think he single-handedly stopped the football play-off. Interesting theory though.

True. Later that year a Texas team that could have made a significant case for being #1 in the country would have been left-out of that same "Plus One" playoff. Florida, Utah, USC and Oklahoma (who lost to Texas) would have been the four. Either way he loses.

Wetzel is just getting emotional. He's just another fool convinced that its the birthright of any undefeated team from the Sunbelt Conference to play in the Super Bowl.

I meant to write USC. That's what happens when I post before my morning cup of coffee. Actually, TX vs UCLA would be a likely scenario for the final game in any Pac10 basketball tournament final.
