In all honesty, what do we think they will do with all the name discrepancies now? Anybody have any somewhat serious suggestions? They've got to change them right?

old Pac 10 now the Pac-12 (when they add Utah) that ones easy
old big 12 now The Plains Conference or The Great Plains Conference
old big ten now The Great Lakes Conference, The Midwest 12, The M-12, The Northern Conference......... could they possibly agree to keep Big Ten? Obviously, we kept a misnomer conference name for a 17 years, but will we continue that forever?

Any other ideas?

This thread is funny but seriously certain conferences are an important brand. The Big Ten is definitely a brand that should not be changed. I suppose a new marketing campaign can be mounted to give alternate basis for using the Ten besides the number of schools in the conference. The conference where the education is a perfect 10.

There is no way the B10 changes its name. There is way to much brand equity in the Big Ten name and network. Basically it would be like say Apple changing there name to Pear or some other fruit. It won't happen

I know its going to be confusing but the Big Ten is going to have 12 teams and the Big 12 is going to have 10. People will get use to it overtime.

No need to change a brand name like the Big Ten. For example, AT&T never changed their name after they stopped making telegraphs like 100 years ago.

So the Big 10 replaces the "1" that served as the donut hole in the "0" with a "2" or "3" or whatever number corresponds to the second digit we end up with. Wasn't the Big 10 once upon a time known as the Western Conference? I suppose the states making up the conference were west as compared to New York or Boston, but there were only 2 states west of the Mississippi at the time.

And it's not as if the Big 12 has a long and storied tradition, so if they do decide to change names, so what?

There's no way the Big 10 changes it's name. As mentioned, there's too much brand equity built up in the Big 10 Network, etc. Besides, the Big 10 has had 11 teams for 20 years. What's the difference if it now has 12?

I do expect the Big 12 to change it's name, if it is serious about staying at 10 teams. It doesn't have nearly the same brand equity and may actually benefit from a new name.

Actually, the Big Ten was officially named the Intercollegiate Conference of Faculty Representatives until 1987, when the conference made the name Big Ten official. The Western Conference was for a time the semi-official name of the conference, but Big Ten quickly took over as the name on all but the legal contracts.l

The new name for the Big 12: "Texas and Friends". To be followed up with "Texas and associates". The final name will be "Texas and the 9 dwarves".

The Big Ten should change its name to the "Very Best Conference". That way you would be affirming that it was the best simply by saying the name of the conference.

Actually they did, they were Cingular for awhile.

No they weren't. Cingular was the mobile Network of SBC and BellSouth.

SBC ended up acquiring AT&T and re-branded all of their ventures as AT&T.

Now that we've finished this lesson on branding, the answer remains that the Big Ten will never change its name.
