Betts=Bust

I know some struggle with being critical of college players but this one is on Betts. Doesn't have to define his career but he messed up in a key situation.

Obviously coaches share in the blame in terms of getting players prepared but at some point you have to be able to trust that a D1 basketball player is going to know the score and situation enough not to foul a player who is nowhere near the basket when your team is up 2 late in a game.
Of course he messed up. So did Chris Weber. It didn't make Weber a bust and this mistake by Betts doesn't make him a bust either. Betts is needed on this team, this year. I hope he learns from this experience. The games over. Move on.

You are making the assumption that Johnson is able to evaluate what talent he has and play them accordingly. Betts hasn't played, not sure we have any idea. Asuma is an example until about now.

Chris Webber was the best player in the country and a few months away from being the #1 pick in the draft when his TO blunder happened. Pretty sure we knew he wasn't a bust

Just saying you can't say "bust" because of one game changing mistake.

I don't think anyone is saying this one mistake is what makes Betts a potential bust. The mistake combined with him being unable to get meaningful minutes on a bad team in his 3rd year of college basketball is why he is potentially a bust, at least as far as this level is concerned.

Obviously players make mistakes....Chris Webber is certainly an example of that but that is where the similarities stop because Chris Webber was also a phenomenal basketball player who went on to have a 15 year NBA career.

I'm never one to give up quickly on players. Betts is still on the younger side, maybe it clicks for him eventually. But he looks like someone that would benefit greatly from a drop in competition level and a change of scenery.

This is really Betts first year of playing and he has only had a few minutes of play. We have no idea how a good coaching staff could grow his game.

I just won't blame Betts at this point in his journey.

What makes Betts a bust is he's not a B1G level basketball player.
That's obvious watching him. Even Johnson realizes this simple, painfully obvious fact.

He doesn't have game .

May have been if he goes to prep school his senior year, then goes to Nebraska instead.

D2 player at best, but according to Ben , he is an athlete!,,,
I'm not sure what Betts is yet. If he moves on, I'd get it, but I am not sure there isn't a decent basketball player there - if used properly. He reminds me of Ihnen a bit where he does have some unique traits. He is a 6'8" 225 lbs 19 year old that can shoot a little bit, and walk and chew bubblegum at the same time. He should be a stretch 4 who cuts, sets a ton of picks and floats to the corners on offense.

I am not sure there is a Big 10 player there but I am pretty confident we won't have 11 real Big 10 quality players next year. So, I guess we'll see.

I actually think there was a role for JOJ last year. It wasn't at a 3, it was as a high-energy, JYD type of player at the 4 but we kept putting him where we WISHED he would be (a big bodied wing) rather than what he really is. And he struggled.

Here we go.....blast Ben for everything time.

Ben loses 3 starters because they became too valuable...(and he also had a 4th valuable starter who returned)...but we blast him for his 11th or 12th man not being good.

Going after Betts is like shooting fish in a barrel. Ben has assembled quite the band of misfit toys.

Just saying you can't say "bust" because of one game changing mistake.
YES agreed!!! However, after three seasons in the program playing minimal minutes on a team talent deprived then yes I believe you could call him a bust. At the very least way over estimated on his ability to play at this level.

I mean, that's not really a logical way to look at things.

When you're analyzing things, I would think you would look at pros vs. cons. I would hope we would recognize Webber had a few more pros to help weigh against the odds.

Webber was a great player who made an inexcusable mistake. Betts has been a non-factor who made an inexcusable mistake.

All of that said, if Betts is a best or not, it'll have nothing to do with the last game, it will entirely depend upon his production going forward.

We agree. We will know, going forward, not based on one bad decision in the heat of the moment.

Not much of an issue considering the overall awful state of the Gophers basketball program, but Betts is a bust. Facts: A 3/4 star in his third full year at a P6 program and he barely sees the floor. He averages less than 10 minutes per game for basically a last place P6 team. Didn't even see the floor in a third of the games so far this season. Ben will not be the Gophers coach in 2025/2026 and I am predicting Betts will not be on the roster. I wish him luck wherever he ends up. I do believe he could have developed into a contributor at a P6 under an actual coach .

The 2022 recruiting class will ultimately be CBJ's downfall (along with just being a bad coach). Whether through wrong evaluations or not being able to coach them up, it turned out to be bad either way.

Betts - hasn't done anything in 3 years.
Carrington - did little while here, playing on a bad Tulsa team.
Henley - did even less while here. Playing on a bad UNLV team.
JOJ - was essentially benched towards the end of last year. Playing on a bad Cal team.
Payne - the one positive of this class. Good contributor. But as we see, on a good/elite team best served as a role player.

I remember being told I didn't know dick about basketball, or program building because I didn't want to wait until these players were juniors or seniors. Well, I'm pretty sure if this was our starting 5 this year, we'd be even worse than we are now. Johnson should have focused more on the portal to team up with Garcia, Battle and Cooper.
You still Don't know dick about basketball!

Has been a strange 4 years. Not his fault tho.
I used to think you were one of the worst posters or something. Or not a Gopher fan.

But I've noticed now that you actually seem to have a brain. Which is very unusual in here.

You are referring to Ben though, right?

Pilgrim- Spaulding positions himself as the Onion of the GH. It's a sarcasm account. "Diffident Ben."
